A Prayer for Wisdom and Humility: Combating the Sins of Pride, Deceit, and Violence
"A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood," - Proverbs 6:17

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today, with humble hearts and a spirit longing for wisdom and guidance. In the midst of a world fraught with pride, deceit, and violence, we seek Your light to shine upon our hearts and lead us in the path of righteousness.
Your Word, in Proverbs 6:17, reminds us of the grave sins that are abominable in Your sight: "A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood." Father, we repent for the times we have harbored pride in our hearts. We ask for forgiveness for moments when we have viewed ourselves as superior to others, puffed up by our own achievements or perceived wisdom.*
Lord, teach us the value of humility. Help us to remember that every good and perfect gift comes from You. Let us find our worth not in our accomplishments but in our identity as Your beloved children. In the words of Philippians 2:3-4, might we learn to esteem others better than ourselves and look out not only for our own interests but also for the interests of others. May we reflect Christ’s humility, who took upon Himself the form of a servant and humbly gave His life for all.
Father, we also seek Your forgiveness for the times we have lied or held back the truth. A lying tongue sabotages relationships, builds walls, and breeds distrust. Help us to be people of integrity, who speak only truth. Teach us to communicate in love and grace, that our words may build up rather than tear down. Remind us that every word we utter has the power to influence, to heal, and to inspire. In a world that often skewers truth for convenience, let us be grounded in Your truth, unafraid to speak it boldly yet tenderly.
As we reflect on the next part of this profound verse, we are painfully aware of the scourge of violence that runs rampant in our world. "Hands that shed innocent blood" are a tragedy too often acted upon in anger, greed, or selfish ambition. We lift up to You, Lord, those who are victims of violence: the innocent lives taken, the shattered families left in despair, and the communities mourning their losses.
Father, bring comfort to those who grieve and heal their hearts. Stir within us a holy anger against violence and a fierce zeal for justice. Show us how to be agents of peace in our world, advocates for the downtrodden, and voices for those who cannot speak. We ask for Your wisdom to guide our hands, that they may be instruments of mercy rather than instruments of harm.
In our daily lives, remind us to interrogate our thoughts and actions against Your Word. Help us to detect any trace of pride, deceit, or violence in our attitudes and behaviors. As David prayed in Psalm 139:23-24, we ask You to search our hearts, to know us, and to lead us in the way everlasting. We long for our lives to be reflective of Your character, Lord, in everything we do.
Holy Spirit, come and fill us with the fruit of Your presence - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help us to cultivate these traits in our interactions with others. May our lives be a testimony of what it means to walk in humility, truthfulness, and peace.
Ultimately, we desire to glorify You and to represent You well in this broken world. May our lives speak of your transformative power, drawing others to a relationship with You. In all things, may Your will be done in our hearts and in our lives.
In Jesus’ mighty name we pray,
Amen.
