A Prayer for Wisdom and Understanding in Listening to Divine Counsel

"But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:" - Proverbs 1:25

"But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:" - Proverbs 1:{verse.verse_number}

Dear Heavenly Father,

As I come before You today, I bow my heart in humility and reverence for who You are—my Creator, my Sustainer, and my Guide. I am reminded of the words from Proverbs 1:25 which proclaim, "But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof." These words resonate deeply within me, stirring a sincere desire to seek Your wisdom and heed Your guidance in my life.

Lord, I acknowledge that there have been times in my life when I have indeed set at nought Your counsel. In moments of pride, self-reliance, or sheer stubbornness, I have neglected to listen to the gentle whispers of Your Holy Spirit that try to steer me away from folly. In those times, I prioritized my own understanding, my plans, my desires over the divine wisdom You graciously provide. I confess this as sin, and I ask for Your forgiveness. Teach me to surrender my will to Yours, to recognize that Your ways are so much higher than my own.

Father, I pray for a heart that delights in Your counsel. Help me to cultivate a spirit that is eager to seek Your guidance in every decision I make, big or small. Instill in me an attitude of humility—a heart that is soft and receptive to the teachings that You so lovingly provide. Help me to remember the importance of seeking Your face through prayer and meditation on Your Word, for it is in these moments that Your truth can penetrate my heart, revealing the areas where I need to change.

Lord, I also ask that You give me wisdom to discern Your voice amidst the noise of this world. It is so easy to be swayed by the opinions of others or by the temptations that surround me. Remind me always that Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105). Let Your truth resonate loudly in my spirit, so that I may stand firm in my convictions, rooted in the knowledge of Your Word.

I desire to be open to Your reproof, dear Lord. I recognize that correction is an important part of growth. Help me to embrace Your discipline as an act of love. May I never harden my heart to Your chastening, but rather receive it with gratitude, knowing that You are refining me into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me understand that correction is not punishment, but rather an opportunity to learn and to grow into the person You envisioned me to be.

As I navigate through life, grant me the discernment to recognize when I am walking away from Your counsel. Encourage me to surround myself with godly influences—a community that sharpens my faith and reinforces Your teachings. I pray for friends and mentors who will speak Your truth into my life and who will challenge me when I stray from the path You have laid out for me.

Father, I thank You for Your endless patience with me, especially during the times when I have ignored Your guidance. I am grateful that You are always ready to welcome me back with open arms, ready to teach me anew. May I commit today to prioritize listening to Your voice above all else.

In closing, I ask that You instill in me a renewed passion for Your counsel—a hunger for Your Word that cannot be satisfied. Help me to study and meditate on it daily, leaning into the wisdom contained within Your scriptures. I long to be imparted with knowledge, understanding, and wisdom that comes only from You. May my heart truly desire to listen, to learn, and to follow Your ways in all I say and do.

In Jesus’ name, I pray.

Amen.
