A Prayer for Generosity and Compassion
"He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again." - Proverbs 19:17

Heavenly Father,
In the stillness of this moment, I come before You with a heart full of gratitude for Your boundless mercy and love. You are the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the One who knows our hearts and sees our every need. I stand in awe of Your sovereign will and Your unfathomable compassion towards us. As I reflect on the wisdom found in Proverbs 19:17, which says, "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again," I feel a deep conviction stirring within me.
Lord, I understand that You call us to open our hearts and our hands to those who are in need. You remind us that in showing compassion to the less fortunate, we are indeed lending to You. What an incredible privilege it is to partner with You in ministering to those who suffer! Teach my heart to be sensitive to the cries of the poor and to recognize the face of Christ in each one of them. Help me to see beyond my circumstances and to grasp the depth of my responsibility as a steward of Your blessings.
I ask for Your grace to cultivate a spirit of generosity within me. Remove any traces of selfishness or indifference that may reside in me. Remind me that every good gift I have received is a blessing from You, and that my resources are not merely for my own enjoyment, but are meant to be shared. Break my heart for what breaks Yours, Lord. Help me to understand the weight of those who struggle, who face each day with uncertainty, and who rely on the goodwill of others.
Father, I request that You grant me opportunities to give—whether it be through tangible provisions like food, clothing, or shelter, or through the gift of my time and attention. Open my eyes to the needs in my community and beyond. Let me never pass by someone in need without offering a kind word or a helping hand. Let my actions reflect Your love, not just in grand gestures, but in the small, daily choices I make. Let my spirit echo the words of Proverbs, affirming that every act of kindness I perform is indeed a loan unto You, which will not go unnoticed.
May I not expect recognition or reward from this world, but rather find comfort in the promise that You will pay me back in Your perfect timing and according to Your divine wisdom. I trust that You see every sacrifice made, every moment spent in service, and every dollar given in love. Help me hold steadfast to this truth when weary or discouraged, and let it spur me on to continue giving even when it feels challenging.
Lord, I pray for a richer understanding of what it means to lend unto You. Let me realize that my generosity can represent the very nature of Your love—unconditional and freely given. May my efforts encourage others to do the same, so that a ripple of compassion spreads through our communities, igniting hope in places shadowed by despair.
I also ask that You bless those who are currently in need, Father. Bring comfort to the afflicted and hope to the hopeless. Let them see You in their struggles and may Your provision be palpable in their lives. Help us, as a collective body, to work together in alleviating pain and suffering wherever we witness it.
In closing, Lord, cultivate within me a spirit that seeks after the wellbeing of others. Let my heart be soft and my actions brave, so that through my life, I may honor You and reflect Your glory. I express my heartfelt gratitude for the teachings of Proverbs and for the wonderful promise made in Your Word. I place my trust in Your bounteous grace and love.
In Jesus’s name, I pray,
Amen.
