A Prayer for Pure Motives in the Proclamation of Christ
"Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:" - Philippians 1:15

Dear Heavenly Father,
As we come before you today, our hearts filled with reverence and awe for who You are, we thank You for Your Word, which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Today, we turn our attention to Philippians 1:15, which states, "Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will." Lord, we seek to expand our understanding of this verse and incorporate its truths into our lives. We recognize that in the world today, as it was in the time of the Apostle Paul, motives vary greatly among those who serve the Gospel.
Father, we first want to acknowledge the diversity of intentions behind the preaching of Christ. It grieves our hearts to think that some may take up the mantle of ministry out of envy and strife, seeking personal gain or recognition rather than a genuine desire to glorify Your name. We pray for those who may fall into this category, that they may experience a transformative encounter with Your Spirit, turning their hearts back to the pure message of the Gospel. Awaken in them a deep understanding that ministry is not a competition, but a calling to love others and share the Good News. May they seek humility and not personal glory.
Lord, in our lives and churches, help us to discern the true spirit behind the message. Strengthen our resolve to encourage those who preach the Gospel out of good will. Instill in us a spirit of unity, that we may connect with fellow believers who are striving to advance Your kingdom. May our hearts always lean towards fostering relationships built on love and mutual support, rather than envy and strife.
Heavenly Father, we also recognize that even when the motives of some are misguided, Your Word can still pierce through the darkness to impact hearts and minds for Your glory. Use us, Lord, as vessels of truth, that even in our imperfections, Your love shines through. Allow us to be a part of the work You are doing, transforming envy into love and strife into reconciliation.
As we delve deeper into our understanding of the Gospel, Lord, make us aware of our own hearts. Reveal to us our motivations—are we serving out of genuine love or seeking recognition? We pray for the sanctifying power of Your Holy Spirit to cleanse us from envy and the desire to elevate ourselves over others. Let us carry Your love in our hearts, motivating us to preach and share Your Word with pure intentions.
May our lives uphold the foundational truth of Philippians 1:15, where preaching becomes a joyful expression of our love for You and Your creation. Help us to focus on the task before us: to share the message of Christ with those around us, regardless of the intentions of others. Remind us that our responsibility is to preach and to share the Gospel with sincerity, regardless of how others might perceive it or respond to it.
Lord, we ask that You bless those who preach with good will, uniting our voices with theirs as we proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ. May we be known as a people who lift one another in prayer, encouragement, and love—fighting against envy and strife, and celebrating the work of Your kingdom in our midst.
In all things, let the focus be on You, Lord Jesus. You are the author and finisher of our faith, the ultimate example of humility and love. May our actions reflect Your character, leading others to You in awe. As we navigate the complexities of the Christian life, remind us continually of the heart of the Gospel—love, grace, and the good news that You came to save us all.
In Your precious name, we pray,
Amen.
