A Prayer of Restoration and Confession Inspired by Nehemiah 1:4-11
"And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer." - Nehemiah 1:4-11

O Lord God of Heaven, the great and terrible God, I come before You with a heavy heart, just as Nehemiah did when he heard the words concerning Jerusalem, his beloved city. I sit here, compelled by the anguish within my soul, for I know that our lives often mirror that broken wall, that shattered place where we have turned from Your ways. Your Word teaches us in Nehemiah 1:4, that when Nehemiah heard the news, he sat down and wept, mourning for days. Lord, I too mourn for the state of my heart, my community, my nation, and indeed the world, where Your name is often forgotten and Your commands are forsaken.
I beseech Thee, O Lord, hear my prayer as I join my heart with those who call upon Your name daily and night. Let thine ear now be attentive and thine eyes open to this, Your servant's plea. I echo Nehemiah's cry with deep reverence for Your faithfulness and mercy. You are the covenant-keeping God, the One who remains steadfast amidst our shortcomings. How great is Your love and compassion for those who truly seek You and adhere to Your commandments.
O Lord, I acknowledge our transgressions before You. I confess the sins of myself and my household, recognizing how we have fallen short of Your glory by choosing paths of corruption, selfishness, and pride. Just as Nehemiah proclaimed, we have not kept Your commandments nor Your statutes, and for this, we fall to our knees. Yet, I remember Your promises that even in our darkest moments, You are waiting with arms extended, ready to receive us back into Your grace.
Lord, as the verse says, ‘If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations’, we have felt the effects of our disobedience. In our scattering, O God, bring us together again as one body, unified in purpose and spirit. Remind us of the hope we have in Your words: though we may be cast out to the uttermost parts of the earth, You gather us, Lord. You desire to bring us back to that place where Your name is honored, and your presence dwells.
Teach us, O Lord, to remember and lean into the promise of restoration that You hold. Seek our hearts and instill the fear of Your name deeply within us. Enable us to turn back to You so that restoration may flow like a river through our lives and communities. We affirm that we are Your servants and Your people, redeemed not by our strength but by Your great power and strong hand.
I ask for Your help today, dear God, as I seek Your mercy. Just as Nehemiah desired favor from the king, I ask for the same in my endeavors—to prosper in the tasks You set before me and to seek Your glory in all that I do. Go before me, O Lord, and grant me favor in the sight of those I encounter.
May I be a vessel of Your restoration to others, reminding them of Your enduring mercy and grace. Let my heart weep for those still in darkness, urging them towards the light of Your love. In Your name, I seek to lead by example, steadfastly clinging to Your commandments and teaching others to do the same.
Thank You, Lord, for hearing my prayer. I trust in Your goodness and mercy, believing that You will respond according to Your perfect will. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
