A Prayer of Humility and Devotion in Fasting
"But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;" - Matthew 6:17

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today, reflecting on the profound words of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who instructed us in the art of fasting found in Matthew 6:17, saying, "But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;" Lord, I acknowledge that fasting is not merely a ritual or an outward display of devotion, but rather it is a deep, intimate journey between my soul and Yours. As I enter into this sacred practice of fasting, I seek Your guidance and strength to approach it with the right heart and purpose.
Father, I thank You for the gift of fasting. It is a moment for me to draw closer to You, to seek Your presence more earnestly, and to reset my priorities according to Your divine will. Help me, Lord, as I prepare for this time of self-denial. May I do so with humility and sincerity, recognizing the weight of the sacrifice I am making in order to seek You more fervently.
Help me, O Lord, to rightly anoint my head and wash my face as I fast. May I not appear to others as one who is fasting in sorrow or distress, but may I enter this season in joy and peace, knowing that my true reward lies in You and not in the accolades of men. Father, I ask for grace to maintain my countenance, to be encouraging and uplifting to those around me, even when I am tempted to moan or complain about my hunger and the sacrifices I've made. Teach me, Lord, to reflect Your light wherever I go, even in this time of fasting.
In moments of weakness and temptation, let Your Spirit remind me of the purpose behind my fast. As I forgo the physical nourishment of food, fill my spirit with the richness of Your Word. Let me feast on the Scriptures and be nourished by prayer. As I experience physical hunger, may it remind me to hunger and thirst for righteousness, as Your Word promises that those who do so will be filled (Matthew 5:6).
Lord, I pray that my heart will be aligned with Yours as I undergo this fast. Help me to let go of all distractions that keep me from drawing closer to You. Whether it be social media, entertainment, or even everyday concerns, teach me to surrender these to You. I want my focus to be entirely on my relationship with You, and I want my thoughts to be saturated with Your goodness and love.
As I fast, Father, I desire the fruits of this practice to manifest in my life. Let it bring clarity to my decision-making, strengthen my resolve against sin, and deepen my love for others. May it be a time of breakthrough and revelation, where You speak to me in ways that transform my life and the lives of those around me. Help me to use this time not only for personal gain but also to intercede for others, giving me a heart that breaks for what breaks Yours, that I may stand in the gap for those in need.
In this journey of fasting, Lord, may I continually seek Your face and not merely Your hand. May my fasting lead to spiritual growth, enlightening my spirit, and awakening my purpose in You. When I am finished with this fast, may it be a new start for my relationship with You — a commitment to continue seeking Your presence, loving Your people, and living out the calling You have placed upon my life.
I take a moment to acknowledge that fasting is not an act that earns favor, but a humble response to the grace You have graciously bestowed upon me. I repent of any pride that may arise during this time, asking You to cleanse my heart and make me more like Your Son, who modeled perfect obedience and submission to Your will.
In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray,
Amen.
