A Prayer of Reflection on the Crucifixion

"Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left." - Matthew 27:38

"Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left." - Matthew 27:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a humble heart, seeking to grasp the profound meaning and implications of the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ, as recounted in Matthew 27:38, where it is written: "Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left." Lord, I acknowledge that this moment in history is not just a mundane event; it is the crux of our salvation, a pivotal point where Your infinite love collided with our deepest need for redemption.

Father, as I envision that scene on Golgotha, I see our Savior hanging between two thieves—one on His right, and the other on His left. I reflect on the gravity of this moment. Here is Jesus, the Innocent One, suffering alongside those deemed unworthy by society. In this juxtaposition, I see Your mercy, Lord. You chose to bear the punishment of sin where it was most evident, where it was most painful, and where it was most necessary.

Lord, I pray that I would never lose the sense of awe when contemplating what transpired that day. As the world turns its gaze away from the cross, let me be among those who understand its significance. I see the two thieves, each carrying their sins, each wrestling with their fate. One mocked, refusing to recognize the grace being offered even in his final moments. The other, however, turned to Jesus with a repentant heart, acknowledging his wrongdoing and seeking mercy. Oh, how profoundly this illustrates my own human condition! I, too, have been a thief—stealing moments of Your grace through my negligence, my anger, my sin. But Lord, even when I falter, You remind me that redemption is available for those who seek it.

Heavenly Father, as I consider the fact that Jesus was crucified between two criminals, I realize that we, too, often find ourselves in a world divided among the saved and the unsaved. Help me not to judge others harshly, as each person stands at the foot of the cross, carrying their own burdens, their own pains. May I remember that I was once lost, deserving of condemnation, and that it is Your grace that has lifted me into the light. Empower me, Lord, to be a vessel of that grace for others. May I, like the repentant thief, have the courage to turn to You and proclaim Your kingship in my life, even when I am surrounded by difficulty.

Jesus, as You hung there, every breath a struggle, yet every moment an exhibition of love, help me grasp the depth of Your sacrifice. You bore the weight of humanity’s sin so that I might be called a child of God. You suffered, not only physically but emotionally, as You bore the shame and guilt of the world. Help me to realize that my sin is what put You there, yet it is also Your love that remains steadfast and unchanging. Thank You, Lord, for enduring such pain for my sake.

I pray for those who, like the unrepentant thief, refuse to see the truth of who You are. I ask that You soften their hearts and open their eyes to the incredible love that You offer—a love that says even the worst among us can be transformed. May it ignite a fire in me to seek opportunities to share the gospel, to witness, and to be an ambassador for Christ.

As I reflect on this powerful scene on Calvary, I commit to living a life that reflects the grace I have received. May I carry the message of hope, understanding that our Savior hung between those who were condemned to highlight the reality of each person’s potential for redemption—because no one is beyond the reach of Your love.

In the precious name of Jesus, who died and rose again so that we might live, I pray. Amen.
