A Prayer for Humility and Servanthood
"And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi." - Matthew 23:7

Dear Heavenly Father,
We bow before Your throne of grace today, seeking Your divine wisdom and guidance. We come with hearts open to understanding the essence of true humility and servanthood, as illustrated in Matthew 23:7: "And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi." Lord, this verse reminds us of the dangers in our human nature, encouraging us to seek recognition and praise from our peers rather than to serve with a humble spirit.
Father, we acknowledge our tendency to want to elevate ourselves in the eyes of others. It is so easy to crave validation and to desire titles or positions that come with respect and authority. We reflect on our lives and see how often we have placed importance on being called by certain names or titles that signify status, perhaps seeking admiration rather than serving with sincerity and grace.
We ask for Your forgiveness, Lord, for the times we have placed our worth in accolades rather than in our service to You and others. Help us to remember the teachings of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve. Instill within us a desire to walk in humility, to seek out the needs of those around us, and to elevate others instead of ourselves.
As we move through our daily lives, whether in our workplaces, at church, or in our communities, may we remember to greet others with kindness and genuine concern, not seeking excessive recognition. Help us to develop hearts that value the simple interactions with our neighbors, offering support and love without the expectation of any title or acknowledgment in return. Let our lives be a reflection of Your greatness rather than our own.
Lord, teach us the true meaning of servanthood. Open our eyes to see the greater good in every moment. When we find ourselves in situations where authority gives us a chance to serve, may we take it to uplift others, to mentor, and to guide, without seeking to be called “Rabbi” or to be praised in public spaces.
We pray for humility in our hearts, Lord—humility that brings us closer to Your purpose for our lives. Help us to echo the sentiments of John the Baptist, who said, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30, KJV). May we bring glory to Your name in everything that we do, seeking not the applause of men, but rather the approval of our Heavenly Father.
We pray that Your Spirit guides us, granting us the strength to resist the temptation of pride and to shun any desire for public approval. Teach us to be content in our roles, knowing that every action taken in love is worthy in Your eyes, regardless of external recognition.
Help us to disciple others in truth, fostering a community where we instill the values of love and service above title and position. Let our conversations in markets and public places reflect Your teachings, proclaiming Your love rather than our achievements. May we advocate for justice, mercy, and humility, transforming our environments to reflect Your Kingdom.
Lord, as we pray not only for ourselves but for our families and the Church, remind us always to encourage one another in the journey of faith, humbling ourselves before You and each other. We ask that You would raise up leaders with hearts of servants, who lead by example despite their titles, reminding us all that it is service and love that reflects true greatness.
In the blessed name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
