A Prayer for Humility and True Riches
"¶ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 19:23

O Gracious and Eternal Father,
With a heart full of reverence and awe, I come before You, reflecting on the profound words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who spoke to His disciples, declaring, "Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 19:23, KJV). Lord, these words resonate deep within me and remind me of the paradox of earthly wealth versus spiritual wealth, and the struggle we face in our pursuit of You amidst the distractions of this world.
As I meditate on this scripture, I recognize the truth that material riches can often bind our hearts and minds, pulling us away from the humility and dependence needed to truly follow You. I ask for Your forgiveness, Lord, for the times I have prioritized worldly possessions over my relationship with You. Cleanse me from the entanglements of greed, pride, and self-sufficiency that often accompany a life of abundance. Help me to see that wealth can be a double-edged sword, presenting opportunities for generosity but also the temptation of self-reliance.
Heavenly Father, I come to You seeking a heart full of humility. Teach me, O Lord, the value of being poor in spirit, for Yours is the kingdom of heaven. Help me understand that it is not the abundance of my possessions that measure my worth, but the richness of my faith and my willingness to serve others.
Let the words of Jesus remind me to evaluate my priorities. Am I seeking treasures on earth that will perish, or am I investing in treasures in heaven that last for eternity? Show me how to live a life marked by generosity and compassion. Inspire me to use the resources You have blessed me with to uplift those in need, to comfort the brokenhearted, and to share the good news of the Gospel. May I remember that true wealth is found in acts of love and kindness, in building relationships, and in drawing others closer to You.
Lord, I pray for those who find themselves ensnared by their own wealth, blinded by the glitter of materialism. Open their eyes to the folly of placing their trust in riches rather than in You. Let Your Spirit stir within their hearts the realization that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions but in the richness of knowing You. May they experience the liberating truth that real fulfillment cannot be found in things but in a personal relationship with You.
I also lift up my community, Father. We live in a society that often measures success by financial prosperity, leading many to chase after fleeting pleasures and temporary gains. Help us, Lord, to be a countercultural movement that values humility, service, and a spirit of giving above all else. Empower us as Your church to speak truth to the lies of materialism, to illuminate the path of righteousness, and to lead others to the everlasting treasure that is found in Jesus Christ alone.
As I relinquish my grip on worldly pursuits, fill me, O God, with a desire for deeper spiritual truths. Grant me wisdom and discernment to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. May I be fueled by passion for eternal matters, and as I do so, let all other things fall into their rightful place. Remind me, Lord, of the promise that when I seek You above all else, I will find both peace and joy—true riches that no earthly treasure can compare to.
In gratitude for Your unfailing love and grace, I submit this prayer, entrusting my heart and desires into Your capable hands. Teach me daily how to live in a way that honors You, demonstrating the true essence of wealth through faith, love, and humility. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
