A Prayer for Forgiveness and Compassion
"Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses." - Matthew 18:23-35

O Lord, our most gracious and merciful Heavenly Father, we come before You, humbled by Your love and overwhelmed by Your grace. We gather in Your presence, acknowledging the profound truth revealed in Matthew 18:23-35, where You teach us about the immeasurable depths of Your forgiveness and the expectations You hold over our hearts and actions.
Oh King of Heaven, You have likened Your kingdom to a certain king, who took account of his servants. As we reflect on this parable, we recognize that we are like that servant who owed ten thousand talents—a debt far beyond our capacity to repay. In our moral and spiritual bankruptcy, we are reminded of our shortcomings, our failings, and our continuous need for Your mercy. Lord, we bow before You today, asking for Your patience and compassion. Just as the servant cried out, "Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all," we also plead, with earnest hearts, for Your indulgence.
Father, we thank You for the grace that You have so freely given us. You sent Your only Son, Jesus Christ, to bear our burdens and to pay a debt we could never merely settle. Thank You for forgiving us, for loosing us from our bonds, and for shedding the weight of our transgressions. Teach us, we pray, to transform this grace into compassion for others. Inspire within us a heart that mirrors Your own, a heart that forgives as we have been forgiven.
Yet, as we read on in Your Word, we are confronted with the actions of this same servant, who, upon receiving such generosity, turned and refused to extend that same kindness to his fellow servant who owed him but a hundred pence. Lord, we recognize the times we have been similarly ungracious. We acknowledge those moments when our hearts have hardened, and we have clutched onto grudges and resentment rather than extending forgiveness. Like the wicked servant, we have failed to see the bigger picture; we have lost sight of the grace that has been bestowed upon us.
Forgive us, O Lord, for our lack of compassion! Help us to understand that by withholding forgiveness, we imprison ourselves in our bitterness, becoming tormentors of our own souls. Illuminate the dark places of our hearts, and free us from the chains of anger and spite. Let us remember the price You paid to forgive us—for Your suffering was not in vain. Give us strength to release those who have wronged us, knowing that true freedom lies in letting go and embodying Your forgiving spirit.
May our eyes be opened to the importance of grace flowing not just from You, but through us to others. Let us be the vessels of Your love, sharing the beautiful message of pardon with all who cross our paths. Help us to see every person as one of Your beloved creations, deserving of compassion as much as we are, all conceived in Your image. As Your Word commands, help us to forgive from our hearts each trespass against us.
Lord, stir our hearts that we might empathize with those who have offended or hurt us, understanding their humanity and our mutual need for Your grace. Let our forgiveness not be a mere obligation, but a joyous expression of gratitude for all that You have done. Deliver us from the torment of our unforgiving spirits, and transform our hearts to reflect Your love in every aspect of our lives.
In Your mighty and compassionate name, we pray, trusting that, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, You will teach us and enable us to be forgiving as You are forgiving. Amen.

"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. At this, the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’ But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart." - Matthew 18:23-35
