“Come”: A Prayer to Step Out of the Boat and Walk Toward Jesus

"And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus." - Matthew 14:29

"And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus." - Matthew 14:{verse.verse_number}

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, I come before Thee with reverence and need, remembering the holy word written in the Gospel: “And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.” Lord, I hear Thy voice in that single word—“Come”—and I confess that my heart longs to obey, yet my flesh trembles when the waves rise and the night grows dark.

Lord Jesus, I thank Thee that Thou dost not merely command from afar, but Thou callest me unto Thyself. Thou art not asking me to trust an idea, but to trust Thee. Thou art not inviting me to prove myself, but to come near to Thee. Speak, Lord, with that same authority and tenderness: “Come.” Let that word be stronger in my soul than the wind in my circumstances. Let it be louder than the accusations that say I am unworthy, and louder than the fears that say I will sink.

Father, I confess that I often remain in the ship of what is familiar—comfortable routines, predictable outcomes, the approval of men, and the safety of my own control. Yet I also confess that true obedience is sometimes a holy descent: “when Peter was come down out of the ship.” Lord, give me grace to come down—down from pride, down from self-reliance, down from excuses, down from delay. Teach me to recognize the moment when Thy call requires movement, when faith is not merely a feeling but a step.

Lord Jesus, as Peter “walked on the water, to go to Jesus,” I ask Thee to place within me a single-hearted aim: not to impress others, not to chase signs, not to escape storms, but “to go to Jesus.” Purify my motives. If Thou blessest me with success, keep my eyes on Thee. If Thou allowest the winds to rage, keep my heart anchored in Thy presence. Let my obedience be simple and true—one step, then another—directed toward Thee alone.

Strengthen my faith, O Lord. When my mind calculates the impossibility, remind me that the impossible becomes a pathway when Thou hast spoken. When my emotions surge like the sea, steady me with Thy peace. When I feel unqualified, remind me that Thy call “Come” is not based on my strength, but on Thy power and Thy promise. I ask Thee to train my attention, that I may behold Thee more than I behold the storm. Let my thoughts be governed by Thy word; let my heart be governed by Thy love.

Lord, I bring before Thee the waters I must walk today: decisions I fear, obedience I have postponed, conversations I have avoided, burdens that seem too heavy, and grief that has shaken my confidence. Thou knowest the private places where my courage fails and my faith feels small. Yet Thou art the same Jesus who spoke that word: “Come.” Speak it over my life again, and grant me the grace to respond.

Teach me, Lord, that faith is not the absence of waves, but obedience in their presence. Teach me that the aim is not to stand on water for my own glory, but “to go to Jesus.” If Thou callest me to serve, I will go. If Thou callest me to forgive, I will go. If Thou callest me to repent, I will go. If Thou callest me to trust Thee with my future, my family, my health, my finances, my ministry, my hidden wounds, and my unseen fears—Lord, I will go, because Thou hast said, “Come.”

And if I falter, Lord Jesus, do not leave me to the deep. Keep me close to Thy heart. Restore my focus, renew my faith, and lift me again toward Thy presence. Make me a witness of Thy saving power, that others who remain in their own boats may also hear Thy voice and find courage to obey.

I yield myself to Thee, Lord. Let my life be a continual answer to Thy call. Let my steps be guided by Thy word, my heart warmed by Thy love, and my eyes fixed upon Thee. For Thou hast said, “Come,” and I desire, by Thy grace, to rise, to step out, and to walk forward—“to go to Jesus.”

In Thy holy name I pray, Amen.
