A Prayer for Humility and Servanthood
"33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? 34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. 35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all. 36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, 37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me." - Mark 9:33-37

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You this day, my heart is filled with gratitude for Your endless love and the wisdom found in Your word. Today, I reflect on the lesson spoken by our Lord in Mark 9:33-37. Your son Jesus, in His divine wisdom, taught His disciples about the essence of true greatness, the greatness that comes not from being elevated above others but from laying ourselves low in service to our fellow man. Lord, help me to grasp the fullness of this teaching and apply it to my life.
In this moment of prayer, I meditate on verse 33, where Jesus, upon reaching Capernaum, gently probes His disciples about their dispute. "What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?" (Mark 9:33). O Lord, may I never find myself engaging in arguments or pride that revolve around status or power. Teach me to be open and transparent, willing to share my heart with others and exhibit humility. Help me recognize the futility of striving for greatness in the eyes of the world when it is Your perspective that truly matters.
When the disciples remained silent, holding their peace in shame, I sense the gravity of their dispute—"who should be the greatest" (Mark 9:34). Dear Father, forgive me for times when I have sought recognition and honor among men. Help me find my identity in You, for I know that earthly accolades and titles pale in comparison to the honor of being called Your child. Let my heart be humble, and my desire be to lift others rather than elevate myself.
As Jesus sat down and gathered His twelve, He imparted profound truth: "If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all" (Mark 9:35). Father, ignite within me a spirit of servanthood. It is so easy to be caught up in the competition of life, to value ambition without the understanding that true greatness lies in servitude. Help me to embrace this counter-cultural message. Let my life reflect the truth that those who wish to lead must first learn to serve. May I seek out the least among us, extending my hand to lift them up, for in doing so, I am doing Your work.
Jesus then brought a child into their midst, demonstrating the delicate innocence and purity of faith (Mark 9:36). Lord, I want to receive and cherish the child-like faith that You call me to. In Your kingdom, the greatest are those who approach You with the heart of a child, trusting and believing without reservation. Help me to have a heart open and receptive to Your guidance and to love others with the same unconditional love that You have shown me.
As Jesus taught, "Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me" (Mark 9:37), let my life be a reflection of this truth. Help me to welcome and embrace every person who crosses my path, treating them with dignity and respect, recognizing that in them resides the image of Christ. May I understand that by serving the least among us, I am serving You, as every act of kindness is an invitation to encounter the divine.
Lord, I thank You for this teaching of servanthood and humility. May my life be a testament to these values, exuding love and grace to all, especially those who are marginalized and overlooked. Transform my heart, Lord. Mold me into an instrument of peace and a vessel of Your love. When I falter, remind me of Your strength, and when I succeed, let me not forget the source of my success is solely rooted in You.
I offer this prayer in the precious name of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Amen.

"They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?" But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."" - Mark 9:33-37
