Rising Early to Seek Thee: A Prayer from Mark 1:35

"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." - Mark 1:35

"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." - Mark 1:{verse.verse_number}

Father in Heaven, I come before Thee with reverence and holy desire, longing to learn from the footsteps of Thy Son. Thy Word declares in Mark 1:35, “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” Lord, I thank Thee for this sacred witness of Jesus—how He sought Thee early, how He chose quietness, how He withdrew from the noise of men and the demands of the day to commune with Thee. Let this verse not merely be read by me, but lived in me.

Teach my heart, O God, to rise with purpose. Put within me a willing spirit to seek Thee “in the morning,” even when my flesh would prefer ease, delay, or distraction. Help me to understand that prayer is not an afterthought, but a holy beginning; not the leftover of my day, but the foundation of it. Lord, I confess that I often rush into my duties without first resting my soul in Thy presence. I confess that I sometimes allow the urgent to overtake the eternal, and I neglect the quiet place where my strength is renewed. Forgive me, and draw me back again.

Thou hast shown me in Thy Word that Jesus, though sinless and full of power, still “rising up a great while before day,” made prayer His first work. If the Son of God sought Thee with such devotion, how much more do I need Thee, Lord. I need Thy wisdom before I speak; Thy peace before I decide; Thy cleansing before I serve; Thy strength before I endure. Therefore, teach me to begin before the day begins, to give Thee the first and best of my attention. Let my early hours become an altar, and let my waking thoughts rise like incense unto Thee.

Lord, lead me to “a solitary place.” In a world filled with constant voices, constant news, constant demands, give me grace to step away. Help me not to fear silence, but to welcome it as a gift. Show me how to shut the door upon distractions—both outward and inward. Quiet the restless thoughts within me, the anxieties that chatter, the memories that accuse, the plans that overwhelm. Bring my mind under the gentle rule of Thy Spirit, that I may truly meet with Thee.

“And there prayed.” Father, make prayer real to me—not a ritual of empty words, but living communion with Thee. Teach me to pray with honesty: to pour out my heart, to confess my sins, to ask for mercy, to seek guidance, and to adore Thy holy name. Teach me also to pray with faith, believing that Thou art near, that Thou hearest, and that Thou answerest according to Thy perfect will. When my prayers feel weak, strengthen me. When my prayers feel dry, revive me. When my prayers feel distracted, gather my heart again. When my prayers feel fearful, remind me of Thy love.

Lord, I bring before Thee my life, my household, my work, my relationships, and my calling. Order my steps in Thy truth. Keep me from temptation. Guard my speech, that it may be seasoned with grace. Guard my heart, that it may not be hardened by pride or wounded by bitterness. Give me compassion for the weary, patience with the difficult, and humility to serve unseen. Make me steadfast in obedience, gentle in correction, and quick to forgive. Let the time I spend with Thee in the solitary place shape the way I walk among people.

Father, I pray for the burdens I carry—those I speak of and those I hide. Thou knowest every care before it becomes a word on my tongue. I place them at Thy feet. Speak peace to my storms. Provide where I lack. Heal where I am broken. Guide where I am uncertain. Strengthen where I am weak. And if Thou dost call me to endure, then grant me grace to endure with hope, trusting that Thou art working all things for Thy glory and for my good.

Above all, Lord, draw me nearer to Thyself. Let my mornings become a testimony that I desire Thee more than comfort, more than sleep, more than applause, more than success. Let my solitary place become holy ground where my faith is renewed and my love is purified. Make me like Jesus in this: that I would seek Thee early and often, and that prayer would be the hidden spring from which my life flows.

I thank Thee for Thy Word, and for this sacred example: “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” Teach me to follow. Help me to rise, to withdraw, and to pray—until my heart learns to dwell with Thee.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
