A Prayer of Surrender in Gethsemane

"And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray. And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand." - Mark 14:32-42

O Heavenly Father,

In the shadow of Gethsemane, we come before You, echoing the anguish and the deep sorrow that Your Son, our Savior, felt in that pivotal moment of His earthly journey. Just as Jesus came to this sacred place, laden with the weight of our sins, we now approach Your throne of grace with humble hearts, yearning for understanding and strength. We are reminded of Your Word as it is written in Mark 14:32-42—"And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.”

Lord, help us to sit still in Your presence, to pause amid our busy lives and distractions, so that we might witness the depths of Your love and the enormity of the sacrifice that lie ahead. As Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John, we are reminded of the importance of fellowship in prayer. Surround us with godly companions who will stand with us in our moments of prayer and sorrow, just as those disciples stood beside their Master. May we never take for granted the community You have provided us, for it is said that where two or three gather in Your name, there You are among them.

We recall how the Scriptures say, "And began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy." Lord, we acknowledge the heaviness that fills our own souls at times. We have our own burdens, our own trials, our own moments of despair. There are days when the weight of temptations, grief, and loss feels insurmountable. In those times, remind us of the invitation to bring all our cares to You. Remind us that it is okay to feel sorrowful; it is okay to cry out to You, just as Jesus did.

In His moment of desperation, He knelt and prayed, saying, "Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.”

Father, instill in us the spirit of surrender that Jesus demonstrated. Teach us to submit our will to Yours, understanding that You are sovereign over all our circumstances. As we face our own trials, grant us the grace to desire Your will above our own. Remove from us any selfish desires, allowing Your plans to unfold in our lives, even when they lead us into discomfort or pain. Help us to carry our own crosses with grace and faith, just as Your Son did, so that we may witness Your glory in our trials.

"Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak." Strengthen our spirits, O Lord. When we are tempted to stray from Your path, remind us to watch and pray, to seek Your strength in our weakness. We recognize that while our spirits aspire to remain faithful, our flesh often falters, succumbing to distractions and temptations. May prayer become our first response rather than a last resort. Help us actively engage in the discipline of prayer that keeps our spirits knit to Yours.

As we reflect on how the disciples fell asleep, despite Jesus’ solemn request, we confess our own lethargy and lack of vigilance in prayer. Forgive us for the times we have not sought You, for the times we have let the urgency of the world overshadow our need for communion with You. Ignite within us a desire to watch and pray and to arise from our slumber, knowing the precious time we have on this earth is fleeting.

Finally, as Jesus declared, "the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners,” we recognize that we, too, are called to rise up. Help us to be alert and recognize the signs of the times. Equip us to respond to the challenges that lie ahead with courage and boldness. We trust in Your promise that no matter the betrayal or the betrayal we may face, You are with us, and in You, we have victory.

In Your loving and holy name, we pray,

Amen.

Mark 14:32-42 - "They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”"
