A Prayer for Righteous Conduct and Contentment
"And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages." - Luke 3:14

O Heavenly Father, Sovereign and Almighty, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your guidance and wisdom as we reflect upon the profound truth found in Luke 3:14. In this passage, the soldiers sought counsel, asking, ‘And what shall we do?’ Their inquiry plunges us into the depths of our responsibilities and the weight of our actions in this world. We acknowledge that life is often meet with conflict, temptation, and the incessant pull towards unrighteousness. Hence, we earnestly beseech You to teach us how to navigate through these challenges with integrity, courage, and peace.
Lord, You have commanded us through the words of John the Baptist that we should “do violence to no man.” This call to non-violence resonates deeply in our hearts, O God. Help us to embody this command in our daily lives. Teach us to embrace peace and to be peacemakers in a world rife with anger and strife. When we are provoked, may we remember Your call to love our enemies and bless those who curse us. Instill within us the strength to respond with grace instead of hatred, courage rather than aggression, and understanding in place of resentment. Guide us to a place where our hearts are aligned with Your will, and our actions reflect Your love for all humanity. Lord, we seek to be your vessels of peace.
Furthermore, we hear the admonition to “neither accuse any falsely.” We recognize the destructive power of our words, and how easily they can lead to misunderstandings and alter the course of relationships. We are often tempted to speak before we think, to judge hastily, and to spread words that can harm others. Grant us discernment, O Lord, so that we may speak life and truth. Illuminate our minds to understand the weight of our words, and may we endeavor to share only what is uplifting and affirming, speaking only what is true and fair. Help us cultivate an atmosphere of honesty around us, where trust is built and confidence flourishes in our interactions.
Heavenly Father, we come to understand the value of contentment, as reflected in the final charge of this verse: “be content with your wages.” In a society that relentlessly chases after more, we often find ourselves in the grips of greed and dissatisfaction. Help us, dear Lord, to embrace the blessings we have, to celebrate the gifts of this life, and to recognize that our true worth comes not from worldly possessions but from our identity as Your beloved children. Teach us to find joy in the simple things, in the love of family and friends, in the beauty of creation around us, and in the opportunities to serve others. May we lean into gratitude and away from comparison, firm in the knowledge that You provide all that we need according to Your riches in glory.
Lord, as we endeavor to apply the teachings of this scripture to our lives, empower us with the Holy Spirit. Fill us with the courage to stand firm in our convictions, to act justly, and to walk humbly before You. May our lives exemplify the principles of non-violence, honest speech, and contentment, making us beacons of light in a dark world. We surrender our hearts, our plans, and our desires to You, knowing that in submission, we find true freedom and purpose.
We thank You, Lord, for the counsel You provide and the transformation You're working within us. Let our prayers be a fragrant offering in Your sight, and may our lives bring You glory. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.
