A Prayer of Reverence and Reflection on the Passion of Christ
"Luke 23:55-56: "And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment."" - Luke 23:55-56

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of the heavens and the earth, we come before You in humility, seeking Your presence as we reflect on the sacred moments surrounding the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we meditate on Luke 23:55-56, we are reminded of the depth of grief borne by those who loved Him, the women who accompanied Him from Galilee, who faced the unfathomable sadness of His death. How their hearts must have ached as they beheld the sepulchre and witnessed how His precious body was laid to rest!
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the brave and devoted women who followed Jesus. They were witnesses of His ministry, His miracles, and His message of love and hope. They were there at the crucifixion, and they lingered as close as they could in their sorrow, watching from a distance as the events unfolded. We acknowledge their courage and faithfulness during such a dark and harrowing time. Lord, strengthen us in the same way, that we might have the courage to stand firm in our faith, even when it is difficult to understand Your plans.
As the verse recounts, "And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after," we recognize their determination to honor their Savior. They did not turn away in despair; rather, they chose to follow after Him, to show their love and devotion in the face of tragedy. O God, grant us such unwavering commitment in our walk with Christ. May we always strive to follow Him closely, to seek Him in our daily lives, no matter how challenging the circumstances may be. Help us to remain steadfast in our pursuit of You, regardless of the trials that may come our way.
We see the women as they went to the sepulchre, filled with sorrow yet with a purpose – to prepare spices and ointments for His body. They wanted to honor Him, to take care of His earthly remains with love and dignity. Lord, teach us that even in loss, there is an opportunity to serve and to love. Inspire in us the desire to provide care and compassion for those who mourn and to honor the memory of those who have touched our lives. Let us be a light to those around us, showing them the same love that they so freely gave.
In reflecting on the act of preparing spices, we remember that preparation requires both intention and effort. Lord, help us to prepare our hearts daily, as the women prepared the spices, that we may be ready to serve, to forgive, to love, and to be instruments of Your peace in a world filled with turmoil. Let our preparations be of a spiritual nature, so that we might glorify You in all that we do.
And after their labor, they rested on the Sabbath, "according to the commandment." O Lord, we seek to honor Your commandments in our lives as these women did. We often find ourselves caught in the busy pace of the world, forgetting the importance of rest and reflection. Teach us the value of resting in You, of taking time to reconnect and rejuvenate our spirits. Help us to find solace in Your presence and peace in Your Word. May we make the Sabbath holy and set apart, just as You have commanded, resting in the assurance that You are with us.
As we close this prayer, let us hold fast to the significance of this moment – the women’s love, their dedication, and their hope amidst despair. May we embody that same spirit as we go forth in our lives, Testifying to Your goodness, holding fast in our faith, and serving others with love in everything we do. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.
