“In a Cloud with Power and Great Glory” — A Prayer in Light of Luke 21:27

"And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." - Luke 21:27

"And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." - Luke 21:{verse.verse_number}

Most Holy God, Eternal Father, Maker of heaven and earth, I come before Thee with reverence and trembling hope, anchoring my heart upon Thy sure word. Thou hast spoken plainly, and Thy promises cannot fail. In the midst of a world that shifts like sand, let my soul stand upon what is written, especially this great declaration of our Lord: “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.”

Lord, I confess that I often live as though tomorrow were guaranteed and as though the unseen were less real than what my eyes can measure. Forgive me for the dullness of my spirit, for the times I have grown careless in prayer, slow to obey, and quick to fear. Awaken me by Thy Spirit to remember that history is moving toward a holy conclusion, and that the return of the Son of man is not a myth, not a metaphor, and not a distant rumor, but a certain event that will break upon the world with Thy appointed fullness. Teach me to number my days with wisdom, that I may apply my heart unto understanding.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of man and Son of God, I worship Thee. Thou camest once in humility, despised and rejected of men, bearing sin and shame. But Thy word declares that the day shall come when “they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.” Let this truth purify my thoughts and steady my steps. Let it quiet my anxious heart when I behold confusion, violence, and uncertainty. When I am tempted to believe that darkness is winning, remind me that the King is not absent, and that Thy appearing shall silence every proud tongue and expose every secret thing.

Father, prepare me for that day. I ask not for empty excitement, but for a holy readiness. Make me watchful without being fearful, sober without being hopeless, diligent without being proud. Keep me from the sleep of spiritual distraction. Deliver me from the love of this world and from the snare of living for comfort alone. Plant within me a longing for righteousness, a hunger for Thy presence, and a steadfast joy that cannot be shaken.

Grant me repentance where I have compromised. Where my heart has held bitterness, uproot it. Where my eyes have wandered into vanity, cleanse them. Where my lips have spoken carelessly, set a watch before my mouth. Where I have trusted myself more than Thee, bring me low, that I may be lifted by Thy grace. Clothe me with humility, for I desire to be found in Thee, not boasting in my own works, but resting in Thy mercy.

Strengthen the Church, O God. Make Thy people faithful witnesses in a distracted age. Let our worship be pure, our love sincere, our doctrine sound, and our lives consistent with the gospel we profess. Give courage to those who suffer for Thy name. Comfort the weary, restore the fallen, and gather the scattered. Let our lamps be burning, our hands ready for service, and our hearts fixed upon the coming of the Son of man.

And Lord, have mercy upon those who do not know Thee. When Thy word says, “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory,” I tremble for those who will behold that sight without a refuge, without forgiveness, without reconciliation. Open blind eyes, soften hard hearts, and draw many to repentance and faith. Use me, even in my weakness, as an instrument of peace and truth. Give me love enough to speak, wisdom enough to listen, and courage enough to obey.

As I wait, keep me faithful in ordinary obedience—in prayer when no one sees, in integrity when it costs me, in kindness when it is not returned, in purity when temptation presses near. Teach me to live as one who will give account, and yet to rest as one who is held by grace. Let the hope of Thy appearing be my comfort in grief, my restraint in temptation, and my strength in labor.

Finally, I praise Thee for the promise itself: that the Son of man shall come “with power and great glory.” Let that glory fill my imagination more than the fading glitter of this world. Let that power be my confidence when I feel weak. And until the day when every eye shall see and every knee shall bow, keep me abiding in Thy love, steadfast in Thy truth, and joyful in Thy salvation.

I ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ, who shall be seen coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Amen.
