A Prayer for Understanding and Eternal Life
""And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? None is good, save one, that is, God."" - Luke 18:18-19

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound inquiry posed by the certain ruler in Luke 18:18-19: "Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" I take a moment to pause in reverence, acknowledging the weight of this question. What does it mean to truly seek Your Kingdom and to inherit the eternal life You so graciously offer?
Lord, I confess that the pursuit of eternal life often becomes muddied by the distractions of this world. The ruler sought a simple answer, yet Your response was profound and illuminating. You turned the focus from the act of doing to the essence of being. "Why callest thou me good? None is good, save one, that is, God." Oh, how this calls me to reflect on my understanding of goodness!
I humbly ask for Your Holy Spirit to search my heart, revealing to me the hidden toils of pride and self-righteousness that may cloud my ability to understand Your perfect goodness. I long to comprehend that true goodness emanates solely from You, and that in my human nature, I am in desperate need of Your grace. Help me, Father, to see the magnificence of Your character, and how it stands in stark contrast to the fleeting pleasures of this life.
My heart aches to know the path to eternal life more clearly. I seek wisdom not just to perform acts of righteousness, but to truly embody Your love and compassion in this world. Jesus, You have shown us that the pathway to inheritance is not merely about following the law, but about forging a deep, personal relationship with You, the embodiment of goodness.
I pray that I may always approach Your throne with the humility that acknowledges my insufficiency and the need for Your perfect strength. Cleanse my spirit from any pretense of self-sufficiency, and let me rest in the knowledge that it is not my works that earn me a place in eternal life, but rather my faith in Your redemptive plan and the sacrifice You made for me on the cross.
Help me, O Lord, to live out the commands You have given. Let the fruits of the Spirit overflow from my heart, manifesting love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Embed Your Word in my heart, equipping me to show others the way to You. May my life be transformed so profoundly that others are drawn to You through my testimony.
In my search for eternal life, I ask for discernment against the illusions of this world that tempt me with instant gratification. Teach me to be patient, to endure, and to stay steadfast in faith. Show me how to lay aside weights and sins that may hinder my race toward the heavenly calling.
Lord, nurture a heart within me that desires not just to inherit eternal life for myself but yearns to pull others into Your fold. May I be a vessel of Your goodness to those who are lost or in despair, reflecting the light of Christ in a darkened world. Remind me that it is not the accumulation of possessions or accolades that pleases You, but rather a heart that seeks to glorify Your name and extend Your grace.
As I ponder the question posed by the ruler, let my answer echo with conviction when I, too, inquire about what I must do to inherit eternal life. Create in me a clean heart, a heart ready to follow You wherever You lead, knowing that You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Strengthen my resolve to earnestly pursue You, understanding that it is in leaning into Your goodness that I will find my eternal inheritance.
In Jesus’ holy name, I pray,
Amen.
