A Prayer for Discernment and Faith in the Days of Expectation
"And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation." - Luke 17:22-25

Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You today as Your humble servants, seeking wisdom and strength to navigate the tumultuous waves of our times. Lord, we are reminded of the words of Your Son in Luke 17:22-25, where He spoke to the disciples about the coming days when they would long to see one of His days, but would not see it. In this plea, we recognize that the longing, the desire to witness Your glory and Your kingdom is deeply rooted in the hearts of Your people.
Lord, we confess that in our desire to see You work among us, we can sometimes allow impatience to grow within us. We desire clarity when faced with uncertainty, and we long to witness the marvelous works of Your hand. However, You remind us that such desires must be tempered with faith and discernment, for we are warned not to chase after fleeting spectacles or misleading signs that might lead us astray.
In this age of distraction and deception, Lord, help us to remain steadfast in our faith. The temptation to follow after every strange doctrine or sensational claim is ever-present. But as You instructed the disciples, we must not heed those who say, 'See here; or see there.' Grant us the wisdom to discern truth from falsehood, and the courage to remain planted in Your Word, which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).
Father, You have given us the divine peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), and it is in this peace that we must dwell. Help us to anchor our souls in the promise of Your return, knowing that it will not come through the clamor of misplaced hopes but will be as undeniable as the flash of lightning that illuminates the sky. Just as lightning shines out of one part of heaven unto another, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be—instantaneous, glorious, and unmistakable.
Oh Lord, let us prepare our hearts for that day. Let us not forget that Jesus, our Savior, must first suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. In His suffering, He demonstrated the depth of Your love for humanity, bringing us redemption through His sacrifice. We, too, are called to bear our own cross, to share in His suffering as we wait expectantly for the fulfillment of His promise. Equip us with the strength to endure trials and tribulations in a world that often stands against us. May we never waver in acknowledging the power of the cross and the hope that arises from an empty tomb.
As we journey through these days, may our longing to see You lead us not into despair or distraction, but into a deeper walk with You. Cultivate our hearts to yearn for holiness, to seek Your presence diligently, and to encourage one another in love and good works (Hebrews 10:24-25). Remind us that while we anticipate Your glorious coming, we must also be Your hands and feet in a world desperate for hope and healing.
Dear Lord, as your disciples, help us to remain vigilant, to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and to strengthen our bond with You through the Holy Spirit. May we not be swayed by the voices that call for our attention but focus instead on the truth that resides in our hearts. May our desires draw us closer to You, and may our anticipation of Your return ignite a fire within us that spreads the good news of the Gospel to all we encounter.
We wait, Lord, with open hearts and eager spirits. We pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Amen.
