A Prayer for Spiritual Sight and Humility
"And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?" - John 9:40

O Lord, our God,
We come before You this day with hearts open and minds ready to receive Your wisdom and grace. As we meditate upon the words of Your Son, found in John 9:40 – "And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?" – we find ourselves seeking deeper understanding of the spiritual implications that lie within this question. We bow our heads in humility, acknowledging the often-blind nature of our own hearts, and we seek to open our eyes to Your truth.
Heavenly Father, how often do we, like the Pharisees, find ourselves grappling with our own perceptions and judgments? In our pursuit of righteousness, we sometimes become so ensnared by our pride that we fail to see clearly. We recognize that the Pharisees were learned in the law and held positions of authority, yet they were blind to the very truth that stood before them in the form of Christ. Lord, help us not to fall into the same trap of spiritual blindness; grant us the sight to discern Your will amidst the noise of our lives.
In moments of self-righteousness, when our pride flares and we insist upon our own understanding, open our eyes that we may see beyond our limited perspectives. Teach us, O Lord, that true wisdom comes not from our intellect but from our willingness to yield to Your guidance. Just as the Pharisees were challenged in their hearts, we pray for a heart that is willing to be challenged, a spirit ready to embrace correction and transformation through Your Holy Spirit.
Father, we recognize that spiritual blindness can manifest in many ways—through judgment of others, through ignoring the needs of those around us, through a lack of compassion and understanding. Cleanse us from these attitudes and grant us a spirit of humility. In humility, may we approach You, recognizing that none of us are beyond Your grace, and that we all stand in need of Your mercy. Just as the blind man had his sight restored, may we also experience a profound awakening that leads us closer to You.
As we ponder the question posed by the Pharisees—"Are we blind also?"—let it echo in our hearts. Are we blind to the needs of our fellow human beings? Are we blind to the call to serve and love as Christ did? Are we blind to the ways in which You are working in our lives, leading us toward greater faith? Let us reflect on these inquiries earnestly, allowing them to pierce our hearts, transforming us from within.
We pray for the grace to see those who are marginalized and afflicted, to be the hands and feet of Christ in this world. Help us to recognize Your image in every person we encounter. May our eyes be opened to the beauty and pain that exists in the lives of those around us. Take away our indifference and replace it with a heart that beats for justice, love, and mercy.
Lord, may Your word be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). Illuminate the dark corners of our lives where we harbor ignorance or obstinance. Let Your truth guide us to a place of understanding and compassion, so we may walk boldly in Your light and reflect it to others.
As we conclude our prayer, we pledge anew to seek spiritual clarity and understanding, to remain vigilant against the temptation of prideful blindness. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may always ask ourselves, "Are we blind, Lord? And if so, open our eyes that we may see!"
In the name of Jesus, who is the Light of the World, we pray. Amen.
