When Fear Sees You Walking on the Sea
"So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid." - John 6:19

Father in Heaven,
I come before Thee in reverence and need, grateful that Thou art near even when my eyes cannot yet perceive Thee. I hold fast to Thy holy Word, and I remember what is written in John 6:19: “So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.” Lord, Thy Word speaks with living power into the moments of my own life when I have laboured long, when I have pushed forward in the dark, and when my strength has been spent upon waves I could not command.
O God, there are seasons when I feel as though I too have “rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs.” I have tried, I have endured, I have pressed on one stroke at a time, yet I find myself still in the midst of the sea—still between departure and destination, still surrounded by uncertainty. In those hours, I confess that I am tempted to measure everything by distance, by effort, and by the strength of my hands. Forgive me, Lord, for trusting my rowing more than Thy sovereign presence. Forgive me for believing that progress depends only upon my striving, and for forgetting that Thou art Lord of wind and wave, of night and storm, of timing and deliverance.
And Father, when the disciples “see Jesus walking on the sea,” it reveals a wonder beyond nature and beyond human reasoning: Thy Son stands above what threatens me. The waters that rise in my heart—worry, sorrow, pressure, fatigue, and fear—are not too deep for Him. The sea that seems unstable under my feet is not unstable under His feet. Teach me to remember that Jesus is not intimidated by what intimidates me. Teach me that He is not delayed by what delays me. Teach me that He is able to come to me in the very place that seems impossible to reach.
Yet the Scripture also says, “and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.” Lord, I confess the honesty of that fear. Sometimes I am afraid not only of the storm, but even of the way Thou comest to me. I am afraid of the unexpected answer, afraid of the unfamiliar path, afraid of the holy interruption. I am afraid when deliverance arrives differently than I imagined. I am afraid when Thy presence feels too bright for my tired mind, too strong for my fragile control, too near for my hidden wounds. Have mercy upon me, O Lord. Quiet the fear that rises when Thou art drawing nigh.
Make my heart able to recognize Thee. If my circumstances blur my spiritual sight, clear it. If my burdens make me interpret Thy approach as threat, heal that distortion. Let me not mistake Thy nearness for danger. Let me not misread Thy power as harshness. Let me not forget that Thou art good, and that Jesus Christ is full of grace and truth.
Lord Jesus, draw nigh unto my “ship”—unto my home, my work, my thoughts, my relationships, my private struggles, my weary prayers. Draw nigh unto the places where I feel alone in the night watch, where I feel I must keep rowing simply to survive. Draw nigh unto the places I have tried to hide, the places I have tried to manage without Thee. Draw nigh unto the wounds I do not know how to explain and the temptations I do not know how to resist. Draw nigh unto me, and let Thy presence be my peace.
Father, grant me faith that does not collapse when the sea is high. Grant me obedience when my feelings are frightened. Grant me humility to receive help, and patience to wait for Thy timing. Teach me to pray instead of panic, to worship instead of worry, to trust instead of tremble. When I have rowed as far as I can, remind me that Thy Son can walk where I cannot. When I am unsure of what I see, remind me that Thou art still God.
Let my life testify that Thou art able to come to me in the midst of trouble, and that Thy coming is not for my harm but for my salvation. Strengthen my heart to welcome Thee, to heed Thy voice, and to rest in Thy authority over every wave.
I ask these things with thanksgiving and hope, believing Thy Word, and clinging to the truth of John 6:19: “So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.” Turn my fear into faith, my striving into surrender, and my night into confidence in Thee.
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
