“Peace Be Unto You”: A Prayer for Christ’s Presence Behind Closed Doors
"¶ Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you." - John 20:19

Lord Jesus Christ,
We come before Thee with reverence and with need, remembering the holy scene of John 20:19. Thy Word declares, “Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.” We hold fast to every word of this testimony, for it reveals not only what Thou didst then, but what Thou art able to do now.
Lord, we confess that there are seasons when our own doors are shut. Sometimes our doors are shut by fear—fear of what people may do, fear of what tomorrow may bring, fear born of past wounds, fear that rises when we look at our weakness and feel surrounded. Like the disciples, we can gather ourselves in secret places of self-protection, shutting out what we cannot control, believing that locked doors can keep sorrow, danger, or shame away. Yet, Father, we acknowledge that fear still finds a way to speak loudly within, and our hearts remain troubled. Have mercy upon us.
We thank Thee, Lord Jesus, that when “the doors were shut,” Thou wert not shut out. Thou didst not wait for stronger faith, clearer understanding, or braver disciples. Thy Word says, “came Jesus and stood in the midst.” We praise Thee that Thou art the One who comes. Thou art the One who stands in the midst of trembling hearts. Thou art present not as a distant observer, but as the risen Lord who draws near to His own.
Come, Lord Jesus, and stand in the midst of our homes, our families, our churches, our workplaces, and our secret thoughts. Stand in the midst of our grief, where we mourn what has been lost. Stand in the midst of our confusion, where we do not know what the next step should be. Stand in the midst of our temptations, where our resolve feels thin. Stand in the midst of our anxiety, where our minds race and our bodies grow weary. Let Thy presence be more real to us than our alarms and our uncertainties.
And as Thou didst speak then, speak now: “Peace be unto you.” Lord, we do not ask for a peace that is merely the absence of conflict, nor a peace that depends upon perfect circumstances. We ask for the peace of Thy voice, the peace that comes from Thy victory, the peace that settles the soul because Thou art near. Let “Peace be unto you” be spoken over our guilty consciences when we remember our sins. Let “Peace be unto you” quiet our hearts when we feel accused and unworthy. Let “Peace be unto you” steady us when we feel pressed on every side.
Lord Jesus, teach us that Thy peace is not fragile. It is spoken by the One who conquered death. It is given by the One who can enter locked rooms and still stand with authority and gentleness in the midst. Help us to believe that no barrier we have built—no wall of fear, no habit of hiding, no closed door of disappointment—can prevent Thee from drawing near when Thou dost will to come.
Forgive us for the times we have assembled with others yet kept our hearts shut, appearing present while remaining guarded within. Forgive us for trusting our locked doors more than Thy living power. Forgive us for believing that safety is found in control rather than in communion with Thee. Cleanse us, Lord, and renew a right spirit within us.
Make Thy church, even when surrounded by opposition, a people who know what it is for Jesus to “stand in the midst.” May we not be governed by fear, but guided by Thy presence. Where we are scattered by worry, gather us. Where we are silent from intimidation, give us holy courage. Where we are divided, bring reconciliation through Thy peace.
Finally, Lord, we ask that Thou wouldst turn our shut doors into places of testimony. Let others see that what fear enclosed, Thy grace entered; what despair darkened, Thy peace illuminated. Make our lives living witnesses that the risen Christ still comes, still stands in the midst, and still says, “Peace be unto you.”
We pray these things with humble faith, trusting Thee who art faithful.
Amen.
