The Courageous Discipleship of Joseph: A Prayer for Boldness
"¶ And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus." - John 19:38

Heavenly Father,
We come before You tonight with humble hearts, seeking Your presence and guidance as we reflect upon the profound act of love and courage exhibited by Joseph of Arimathaea, as recorded in John 19:38. Your Word tells us, "And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus."
Lord, as we meditate on this passage, we recognize the emotional turmoil Joseph must have experienced. He was a man of stature and influence, yet, he chose to follow You in the shadows, driven by fear and social pressure. How often have we, like Joseph, allowed the fear of man to dictate our commitment to You? We confess our reluctance to share our faith openly, our hesitance to stand for what is right when facing opposition or ridicule.
In Joseph’s plea to Pilate, we see a glimmer of hope—a spark of courage ignited by love. Even in his fear, he found the strength to approach the governor boldly, to ask for the body of his Savior. Father, we pray that You would instill in us that same spirit of courage. Grant us the boldness to stand for Christ, despite the consequences or the judgment from others. Help us to see that true discipleship may sometimes require us to risk our own reputation, to embrace discomfort, and to step out in faith.
Lord, we ask that You empower us with the Holy Spirit, just as You empowered Joseph. May we be filled with a passionate love for Christ that compels us to act. Help us to speak out against injustices in our community, to advocate for the vulnerable, and to be servants to those in need. When we face challenges, remind us of the sacrifice You made for us, a sacrifice that Joseph honored even after Your crucifixion.
As Joseph courageously took down the body of Jesus, so help us to take down our own fears and doubts. Help us dismantle the walls we have built around ourselves to protect our comfort and our lives. Teach us, Lord, that true safety is found only in You and not in the acceptance of the world. May our allegiance to Christ supersede our desire for social acceptance or recognition.
Father, we also pray for those who feel alone in their discipleship. For those who, like Joseph, have hidden their faith for too long. May they find strength and encouragement through Your Word and through the support of fellow believers. We pray that they would see the beauty in openly declaring their love for You, knowing that You are with them in every season, in every challenge.
While Joseph faced scrutiny, he also experienced a profound moment of glory as he prepared Christ’s body for burial. Remind us that when we choose to step out in faith, even amidst fear, You have great plans for us that can lead to profound encounters with Your grace. Let us not overlook the significance of Joseph's actions; his secret discipleship transformed into a testimony of faith that served an incredible purpose in Your redemptive plan.
Lord, may we learn to be bold disciples. Let us follow the example of Joseph not only in our actions but in our hearts. Help us to desire to glorify You in all that we do, so that our lives may point others to Your endless grace and mercy.
As we conclude this prayer, let us carry the spirit of bravery and boldness wherever we go, continuously seeking ways to express our faith. Maximize our potential for good in this world and while we navigate through fear, keep our eyes tirelessly fixed on You, our Savior, who understands every struggle we face.
In Your glorious name we pray,
Amen.

John 19:38
John 19:38 - "¶ And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus."
John 19:38-42 - "Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there."
