A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment in Our Speech
"Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge." - Job 35:16

O Heavenly Father,
In this moment of reflection, I come before You, mindful of the profound wisdom found in Job 35:16, which reminds me, "Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge." Lord, I confess that there have been many times in my life when I, too, have spoken without understanding, let my lips be quick to utter what my heart and mind have not fully grasped. I ask for Your forgiveness for these empty words that have sprung from a place of impatience, frustration, or lack of insight.
I seek Your direction today, O God, for I understand that my words carry weight and power. In Proverbs 18:21, Your Word tells us, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Help me to grasp this truth, Lord, and to be ever vigilant about the words I speak. I desire my speech to be laced with knowledge and grace, bringing encouragement and enlightenment to those around me.
As I stand in the light of Your Truth, guide me to discern when to speak and when to listen. There is a time for everything, as Your Word says in Ecclesiastes 3, and I pray for the wisdom to recognize those pivotal moments. May I never find myself speaking in vain or filling the silence simply to ease my discomfort. Rather, let me embrace the quietness of the heart where I can commune with You, listen to Your still small voice, and gather the understanding that leads to fruitful conversation.
I humbly ask You, Lord, to purify my intentions. May my expressions stem from a heart rooted in love, compassion, and humility, rather than pride or a need to prove my own significance. Help me to emulate Christ’s example, who was often measured and deliberate in His words, speaking life and truth to those around Him.
Enable me, blessed Father, to reflect upon the words of others with an open heart. Too often, I rush to judge or respond without comprehending their perspective. Grant me the grace to listen actively and attentively, allowing me to utter responses filled with wisdom that are born out of reflection rather than impulsivity. Let me be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath, as You have instructed in James 1:19.
I also lift up those in my life who may be in need of counsel or encouragement. Give me the knowledge and insight to speak life into their situations. Help me to bear witness to Your goodness through my words, ensuring that they are seasoned with salt, as instructed in Colossians 4:6, that I may know how to answer every person with a heart reflecting Your love.
Heavenly Father, I know that there is richness in silence too. Teach me the art of contemplative silence where I can commune with You, absorbing Your wisdom before I attempt to share it with others. Let every opportunity to speak serve the purpose of building up those around me rather than tearing down.
As I strive each day to stay aligned with Your will, I ask that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit, instilling in me a deep understanding that words have the power to breathe life or cause despair. Let me choose to speak truth rather than falsehood, hope rather than despair, love rather than hate. May my actions resonate with the teachings of Your Word, always reflecting the heart of Christ.
In all things, Lord, let my speech bring glory to Your name. I remain grateful for the gift of communication and the responsibility that comes with it. Thank You for hearing my prayer. In Jesus' name, I pray,
Amen.
