A Prayer for Justice and Righteousness

"They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge." - Jeremiah 5:28

"They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge." - Jeremiah 5:{verse.verse_number}

O Lord Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Righteous Judge and Sovereign over all, we come before You today with hearts heavy and burdened by the injustices that surround us. As Your Word declares in Jeremiah 5:28, “They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.”

Father, we see the truth of this verse manifest in our world, where the rich and powerful thrive, often at the expense of the weak and marginalized. We lament the fact that too many have turned a blind eye to the cries of the fatherless, the destitute, and the oppressed. We seek Your forgiveness for the moments when we, too, have ignored those in need, when our hearts have grown callous, and when we have failed to speak out for the voiceless.

Lord, we ask that You soften our hearts and awaken us to the plight of those suffering around us. Help us to see beyond our own needs and desires, to recognize the struggles of the fatherless and the widow, the poor and the downtrodden. Instill in us a spirit of compassion that reflects Your love and care for the least of these. Let us not be content to simply go about our daily lives while injustice reigns. Instead, give us a fierce longing to defend the cause of those who are unable to defend themselves.

As we reflect on the arrogance of those who have waxen fat and shine, we notice their complacency in the face of wrongdoing. Lord, grant us the courage to stand up against the wickedness that often goes unchallenged. May we be bold, like the prophets of old, to call out injustice when we see it, whether in our communities, our nation, or the world. Fill us with Your wisdom so that we may judge rightly, advocating for those whose voices are silenced.

In Your mercy, show us the areas in our lives where we have become like them—content with our own prosperity while ignoring the plight of others. Reveal to us the ways we can actively contribute to justice, mercy, and righteousness in our community. Help us to be agents of change, using our gifts and resources to uplift those who are poor and needy. As Your followers, we acknowledge our responsibility to reflect the heart of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve.

Lord, we pray for leaders in our society—politicians, judges, and influencers. We ask that You stir their hearts toward justice and righteousness. May they recognize their calling to uphold the rights of the needy and safeguard the cause of the fatherless. Let them not be blinded by greed or selfish ambition but let them be moved by compassion and a sense of duty toward those they serve.

We lift up those who are suffering right now, the fatherless children who have no one to protect them, the families living in poverty who struggle to make ends meet, and all those who have been wronged by an unjust system. We ask that Your hand of provision and protection be upon them. May they experience Your love in tangible ways, through acts of kindness and generosity from those around them.

Lord, ignite a passion within us to not only pray for justice but to actively pursue it in our daily lives. Help us to partner with organizations and movements that seek to uplift the marginalized. Let us be voices for justice and advocates for the vulnerable, so that they may experience hope and healing.

In Jesus’ name, we pray for a world where justice flows like a river, and righteousness like a mighty stream. May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
