A Prayer for Renewal and Return to the Source
"For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water." - Jeremiah 2:13

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of Heaven and Earth, I come before You with a heavy heart burdened by the sins of our people as outlined in the profound words of Jeremiah 2:13: "For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water." Lord, I recognize that these words resonate now more than ever, echoing the need for repentance, restoration, and a return to Your abundant grace.
Heavenly Father, we have wandered far from the springs of life, abandoning the source of true joy, peace, and fulfillment that only comes from knowing You intimately. In our pursuits of self-satisfaction, we have sought fulfillment in things that cannot satisfy—the broken cisterns of our age. Remind us, O Lord, of the emptiness that lies in chasing after worldly dreams and desires. We confess our transgressions and acknowledge that we have placed our trust in our own understanding, turning away from the fountain of living waters, which You are.
In our quest for independence, we have built unto ourselves cisterns of pride, materialism, and a false sense of security. Forgive us, Lord, for turning away from You, the ever-flowing river of life, and instead digging dry wells that promise much yet yield nothing of substance. These broken cisterns—our idols, ambitions, and distractions—fail to hold the life-sustaining water we so desperately need. Teach us, Father, to recognize the futility of our ways and to seek You diligently as the only true source of refreshment and sustenance.
Lord, I cry out for a revival among Your people. Stir within us a deep yearning to return to Your loving embrace, to the fullness of life that is found in Your presence. Help us to understand that apart from You, we can do nothing (John 15:5). May we reject the allure of the empty vessels we have created and instead seek the living water that quenches our thirst eternally.
In repentance, I ask that You cleanse our hearts and renew our minds. Pour out Your Spirit upon us, that we may recognize the ways we have misaligned ourselves with Your will. Teach us to rely on Your word, to drink deeply from the well of truth that nourishes our souls. Let us not be deceived by the broken promises of this world but remember the covenant You have extended to us—a promise that assures us we have access to the living water that springs up into everlasting life (John 4:14).
Lord, may our hearts break for what breaks Yours. Help us to share the living water we have found with a thirsty world, pointing others to the fountain of living waters. We pray for those who are lost and desiring but unaware of the wellspring that awaits them in You. Empower us to be vessels of Your grace, healing, and hope. May we reflect Your light in a world that so desperately seeks fulfillment in darkness.
As we gather in prayer, I lift up our churches, our communities, and our nation. We need a collective awakening—a hunger for righteousness that compels us to turn back to You, abandoning all false jars that cannot hold water. May this be the generation that cries out for the fountain of living waters and, in unity, returns to You with open hearts and souls ready to be refreshed.
Empower us, O Lord, to be instruments of Your love and to proclaim Your goodness to the ends of the earth. Thank You for Your infinite patience and love, always inviting us back when we stray. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
