Seeing the Almond Rod: A Prayer for Awake Vision and Obedient Hearts

"¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree." - Jeremiah 1:11

"¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree." - Jeremiah 1:{verse.verse_number}

O LORD God of heaven and earth, Holy and faithful, I come before Thee with reverence and with need, desiring to hear Thy voice and to respond as a servant. I thank Thee that Thou art not silent, that Thou dost speak, and that Thou dost call by name. Thy Word testifieth of Thy personal dealings with Thy people, and I ask that the same God who spoke in times past would speak unto me by Thy Spirit and by Thy truth today.

Father, I set my heart upon the Scripture, and I confess it before Thee: “Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.” LORD, let this Word come unto my life with power. Let it not be a distant account for another time, but a living witness of how Thou dost awaken, instruct, and commission those whom Thou hast chosen. When Thou askest, “What seest thou?” grant that I may not answer from fear, from confusion, or from the noise of the world, but from a spirit made quiet before Thee.

O LORD, train my vision. In a generation of many images and few truths, cleanse the eyes of my understanding. Teach me to discern what is of Thee and what is not of Thee. When Thou dost bring a matter before me, give me grace to look again—slowly, honestly, and with faith. Let me not call darkness light, nor light darkness. Let me not be swift to speak while being slow to see. If Thou dost ask me, “What seest thou?” make me willing to answer plainly, as Jeremiah did, without embellishment, without excuses, without hiding.

And LORD, as Thy servant said, “I see a rod of an almond tree,” so I pray that I may perceive the signs of Thy purpose. Make my heart awake to Thy timing. Almond blossoms come early; so teach me that Thou art able to bring forth what Thou hast spoken, and that Thou art not hindered by seasons, delays, or the doubts of men. Let me recognize the beginnings of what Thou art doing, even when it is only a rod in my hand and not yet a full tree in bloom. Grant me patience to nurture what Thou hast planted, and boldness to hold what Thou hast placed before me.

LORD, I ask for courage to be attentive when Thy Word comes. When Thou dost call my name—whether in the quietness of prayer, through the conviction of Scripture, or by the wise counsel of those who fear Thee—let me answer with a willing spirit. Deliver me from spiritual dullness. Shake off slumber from my soul. Where I have grown accustomed to the holy, rekindle awe. Where I have neglected obedience, restore reverence. Where I have relied upon my own strength, bring me back to humble dependence.

Father, make me faithful in the small things that prepare me for greater things. A rod may appear simple, but in Thy hand it signifies authority, direction, correction, and guidance. Teach me to accept Thy discipline as love. Teach me to walk in Thy ways even when the path is narrow. If Thou dost set a rod before me—some clear instruction, some prompt correction, some call to speak truth—let me not resist Thee. Let me yield my will, my schedule, my desires, and my reputation to Thy perfect counsel.

O LORD, grant me the grace to see as Thou wouldst have me see: to notice the needs around me, to perceive the burdens Thou hast given me to carry in prayer, and to recognize opportunities to do good. Let my eyes be lifted from selfish concerns, and let my heart be moved by what moves Thee. Where there is injustice, give me a voice of righteousness. Where there is sorrow, give me compassion. Where there is error, give me steadfastness in truth. Yet keep me gentle, lest knowledge make me proud and zeal become harsh.

Finally, LORD, I ask that my life would answer Thy question with integrity. If Thou dost ask me today, “What seest thou?” let my answer be shaped by a heart that has been with Thee. Let me see Thy faithfulness in every season. Let me see Thy hand even when circumstances are uncertain. Let me see Thy calling more clearly than my fears. And as Thy Word came unto Jeremiah, let Thy Word come unto me—directing, correcting, strengthening, and sending me forth.

I submit myself to Thee, trusting that what Thou hast spoken Thou art able to perform. Keep me awake, keep me near, and keep me obedient. In all things, be glorified, O LORD. Amen.
