A Prayer for True Faith Without Favoritism
"My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment." - James 2:1-13

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with humble hearts, acknowledging the truth of Your Word found in James 2:1-13. We bow our heads, recognizing that sometimes we fall short of the love and grace You require of us. Lord, help us to remember that faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, directs us to love all people equally and without prejudice.
Oh Lord, You have called us to be vessels of Your love and grace. Yet, we confess that at times we let societal views and superficial measures influence how we treat others. We have regarded those clothed in fine attire and adorned with gold rings as more worthy of our esteem, while we have turned a blind eye to those in humble circumstances, dressed in vile raiment. Forgive us, Lord, for this favoritism which clouds our judgment and blinds us to the inherent worth of every individual made in Your image.
As stated in Your Word, help us to understand the seriousness of this sin of partiality. We are reminded that to respect some persons over others is to be guilty of evil thoughts and to play the part of judges who do not reflect Your mercy and fairness. May we be moved by Your Spirit, O Father, to see beyond outward appearances and to recognize the heart within every person who walks through our doors.
We are reminded that You, the Creator of the universe, chose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom promised to those who love You. Let us never despise those whom You have chosen and lifted high, yet society may deem lowly. Help us to open our eyes and see their richness, Lord! Give us the courage to extend our hands to them with love and to be a community that treasures each person equally, regardless of wealth or status.
Lord, you remind us of the judgments that arise when we allow our biases to govern our actions. We are aware that the rich often oppress those who are poorer and that they may even lead us to wrong judgments through their influence. Open our hearts, Lord, to not fall into the trap of the world’s way of valuing people, allowing us to be transformed by Your love and truth. Aid us in speaking up against oppression regardless of the source, being advocates for those who have no voice.
Father, instill within us the royal law of loving our neighbor as ourselves. We yearn to fulfill this commandment fully. Teach us to practice this law each day, in our minds and hearts, through our actions and words. Enable us to see ourselves as part of a larger body—the body of Christ—where each person, regardless of their social standing, is worthy of love and acceptance.
We are reminded that breaking this law, even in the smallest ways, makes us transgressors. Help us to practice integrity in our thoughts and actions, speaking and doing that which reflects Your righteousness. May we strive for holiness in our engagements and uplift every soul we encounter with kindness, mercy, and grace.
And Lord, we arrive now at Your promise, a profound one—that mercy will triumph over judgment. Help us to embody this truth! Help us extend mercy to others just as You have showered us with mercy. May we choose to be agents of Your love, spreading warmth and understanding where there is division and strife. Let our love for one another be a testament of Your kingdom.
Thank You, Father, for Your Word that guides us. Continue to mold us into a community that shines brightly with Your love, reflecting Christ, who embraced all sinners. We ask all this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
