Under the Government of the Prince of Peace: A Prayer from Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

O Holy and Sovereign God, we come before Thee with humble hearts and reverent awe, blessing Thy Name for the sure word of prophecy and the living hope it gives to Thy people. We set our hearts upon Thy promise written in Isaiah, and we worship Thee for the gift that Heaven has given to earth. Thy Word declares, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” We receive this sacred testimony with thanksgiving, and we ask Thee to write its truth upon our minds and deep within our spirits.
Father, we praise Thee for the mystery of grace: “For unto us a child is born.” We thank Thee that Thou didst not remain distant from our weakness, but didst enter into our humanity. In our frailty and sorrow, in our temptations and burdens, Thou didst provide not only words of comfort but a living Redeemer. Teach us to behold this Child with faith, to cherish His coming with wonder, and to remember that Thy compassion is not a theory but a Person given for us.
We also bless Thee for the love revealed in these words: “unto us a son is given.” Lord, we confess that we could not earn such a gift, nor could we deserve it; yet Thy heart overflowed with mercy. Let gratitude rise in us like incense, and let our lives answer back with surrender. Where we have taken Thy gift lightly, forgive us. Where we have grown cold, warm us again by the greatness of Thy giving. Make us a people who live as those who have received a Son—walking in humility, obedience, and holy joy.
And, O Lord, we bow before Thy authority and dominion, for Thy Word says, “and the government shall be upon his shoulder.” We confess that we often place the weight of our lives upon our own shoulders, striving anxiously as though everything depends on us. But Thou hast declared that rightful rule rests on Him. Therefore we yield our hearts, our homes, our plans, our time, our finances, our relationships, and our future under His government. Teach us to trust His reign when circumstances feel unstable, when nations tremble, and when our personal world seems shaken. Let Thy order be established in our inner life: rule our thoughts, rule our desires, rule our words, and rule our choices.
Lord Jesus, we adore Thee in the glory of Thy Name, for it is written, “and his name shall be called Wonderful.” Be Wonderful in our eyes again. Restore to us the holy amazement of who Thou art and what Thou hast done. Where we have reduced faith to routine, awaken awe. Where we have expected little, enlarge our expectation. Work in ways that cause us to marvel at Thy wisdom, Thy mercy, and Thy power.
Thy Word also calls Thee “Counsellor.” We ask Thee to counsel us. Speak into our confusion, direct us in our decisions, and correct us in our errors. In times when we do not know which way to turn, be Thou our guidance. Silence the noise of fear and the clamor of false voices, and make Thy counsel sweeter to us than our own opinions.
Thou art named “The mighty God.” We bring Thee our weakness, our temptations, our battles, and our impossibilities. Stretch forth Thy strength where ours fails. Break chains that hold us, heal wounds we cannot mend, and overcome sins we cannot master by human effort. Let Thy might be displayed in deliverance, in steadfast faith, and in holy living.
Thou art called “The everlasting Father.” We ask Thee to father us with tenderness and steadfast care. Heal the places in us marked by abandonment, fear, or insecurity. Teach us to rest in Thy constancy—unchanging, unfailing, eternal. Let Thy fatherly love form our identity and make us secure in Thy keeping.
And Thou art “The Prince of Peace.” We ask Thee to speak peace into our hearts and into our homes. Where there is turmoil within, command calm. Where there is division between people, plant forgiveness and reconciliation. Where anxiety rises like a flood, let Thy peace stand guard. Make us peacemakers, not merely peace-seekers, reflecting Thy character in our speech and conduct.
Lord, seal Isaiah 9:6 within us. Let it shape our worship, strengthen our faith, and steady our steps. May the Child born and the Son given be exalted in our lives. May His government increase in us day by day. And may His Name—“Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace”—be honored in our thoughts, proclaimed by our lips, and displayed through our love.
We ask all these things with thanksgiving, trusting Thy promise and leaning on Thy grace. Amen.
