Lift Up Our Eyes: A Prayer to the Creator Who Calls the Stars by Name
"Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth." - Isaiah 40:26

O Lord our God, Most High and everlasting, we come before Thee in reverence and holy awe. We confess that our eyes are often fixed on the dust of this world—on burdens, schedules, fears, regrets, and what we cannot control. Yet Thou, in mercy, callest us upward. Thou invitest us to look beyond ourselves, beyond the noise and shadows of this present life, and to behold Thy majesty. Today we take Thy word upon our lips and into our hearts, and we pray it back unto Thee: “Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.”
Lord, help us to lift up our eyes on high. When discouragement presses down upon our minds, raise our gaze. When anxiety tries to govern our thoughts, turn our attention to Thy steadfast rule. When we feel small, unseen, or forgotten, remind us that the One who created the heavens also sees us, knows us, and holds us. Thou hast made the heights above, and Thou art not distant from the lowly beneath. Teach us to behold Thee—not merely to glance, but to gaze with faith, to consider with wonder, and to worship with all our strength.
We behold Thee as Creator. Thou art He “who hath created these things.” The stars are not accidents, and the heavens are not empty; they are the work of Thy hands. The night sky declares Thy order, and the vastness above speaks of Thy wisdom. Lord, forgive us for the moments we live as though our problems are greater than Thy power. Forgive us when we think our needs are too many or our sins too deep. If Thou hast created these things, then surely Thou art able to renew our hearts, guide our steps, and restore our hope.
Thou art the God “that bringeth out their host by number.” Nothing in Thy creation is random, and nothing in our lives is beyond Thy knowledge. Thou dost not lose count; Thou dost not forget; Thou dost not miscalculate. Teach us to trust Thy perfect ordering. When our plans fail, when our strength diminishes, when our path seems uncertain, anchor us in the truth that Thou art the Lord who brings forth and sustains. Make us patient when we cannot see the full design, and make us faithful while we wait for Thy purposes to unfold.
And Lord, we marvel that Thou “calleth them all by names.” If the countless lights of heaven are named by Thee, then our lives are not anonymous before Thy throne. Speak peace over the places in us that feel overlooked. Call us by Thy grace into repentance where we have wandered. Call us by Thy mercy when shame tries to silence prayer. Call us by Thy truth when we are tempted to believe lies about who we are. Let Thy voice be stronger than every other voice, and let Thy calling settle our hearts.
We worship Thee for “the greatness of his might.” Thou art not merely strong; Thy might is great. Thou art not weary, nor diminished by the needs of Thy people. Thou art not surprised by the darkness of this age. Let the greatness of Thy might dismantle our unbelief. Let it break the chains of fear. Let it strengthen those who are weak in body, weary in mind, and heavy in spirit. Let it comfort those who grieve, uphold those who endure trial, and guide those who stand at crossroads needing wisdom.
For Thou art “strong in power.” Lord, we submit our lives to Thy power—not in dread, but in trust. Use Thy power to sanctify us. Use Thy power to soften hard hearts. Use Thy power to guard our homes, to steady our churches, and to turn our communities toward righteousness and compassion. Where there is division, bring healing; where there is injustice, bring truth; where there is temptation, provide deliverance.
And we rest in this promise: “not one faileth.” O faithful God, nothing Thou hast made slips from Thy hand. Nothing Thou hast purposed can be overturned. Let this assurance quiet the storm within us. If not one of the stars fails to answer Thy command, then Thy grace will not fail to reach us, Thy mercy will not fail to sustain us, and Thy promises will not fail to stand. Teach us to live with lifted eyes and steady hearts, praising Thee in the day and trusting Thee in the night.
Hear our prayer, O Lord, and make our worship true. We lift up our eyes on high, and we behold Thee—Creator, Keeper, and King. Amen.
