A Prayer for Provision and Sustenance
"And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year." - Genesis 47:17

O Heavenly Father,
We come before You with hearts filled with gratitude and humility, acknowledging Your majestic providence that sustains all life. In the book of Genesis, we read how Joseph, a servant of Your will, provided for the people in a time of great famine. The verse states: "And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year." (Genesis 47:17 KJV)
Lord, as we reflect on this passage, we recognize the profound truth that You are our ultimate provider. Just as You guided Joseph to be a source of sustenance and hope during a time of desperation, we trust that You have a plan for each of us, even in the seasons of shortage and chaos in our lives.
We lift our voices to You, O God, asking that, like Joseph, we may become conduits of Your blessings to others in their times of need. Instill in us the heart of a servant, prepared and willing to share what we have, whether it be material resources, kindness, or the hope that only comes from Your loving grace. May we exchange our pride for humility, our fear for faith, and our scarcity for abundance through Your Spirit.
Lord, teach us to recognize that just as the people brought their cattle to Joseph, we too must bring our burdens and anxieties to You. Help us to understand that by placing our trust in You, we will find true sustenance. We often try to save ourselves through our own strength and understanding, yet it is in our dependence on You that we find peace. Just as Joseph provided bread in exchange for cattle, may we find spiritual nourishment in Your Word, which is our daily bread.
Father, I ask for Your grace to feed our souls with a hunger for righteousness that cannot be quenched by the offerings of this world. Let Your Word dwell richly within us, guiding our hearts and minds, nourishing us with wisdom and discernment as we navigate life's challenges. May we savor the sweetness of Your promises, much like the desperate families of Egypt found relief in the bread given by Joseph.
As we take our burdens and our cattle—representing our resources and trials—let us not hold them tightly, fearing lack and scarcity. Instead, help us to openly present them to You, trusting that You will manage our lives far better than we could ever do on our own. Masterful Provider, ignite within us the courage to share, to release control, and to embrace the flow of Your abundance each day.
May our faith be strengthened as we witness the results of surrendering our resources and our very selves into Your capable hands. May we see Your provision manifest in ways we did not expect, just as the people of Egypt saw their needs met through Joseph’s hands. Let us come together as a church, unified in love, sharing not only our material blessings but also our spiritual gifts for the good of the Body of Christ and the glory of Your name.
O Lord, amidst our struggles, help us to remember the uplifting truth revealed in this passage: that You see our needs and respond with grace. Provide us with the strength to endure, the wisdom to recognize opportunities for sharing, and the willingness to accept help when it is offered.
May this prayer serve as a reminder of Your infinite provision in our lives, and may we always return to You with grateful hearts, ready to give and to serve, just as Joseph did.
In the mighty name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.
