A Prayer of Dependence and Provision
"And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth." - Genesis 47:15

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of the universe, we come before You in humble adoration, acknowledging Your supremacy over all things. As we reflect upon the words of Genesis 47:15, "And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth," we are reminded of the fragility of worldly resources and the importance of turning to You as our ultimate provider.
Heavenly Father, we recognize the desperate situation faced by the people of Egypt and Canaan. When their money failed, they found themselves in a place of vulnerability and need. We thank You, Lord, for imparting wisdom to Joseph, who, through Your guidance, became a source of salvation during a time of famine. Just as the Egyptians turned to Joseph seeking bread, we, too, come to You, Lord, for sustenance and provision.
In a world where material wealth can suddenly disappear, where economies can crumble and resources dwindle, we humbly ask for Your divine provision in our lives. We confess our tendency to rely on our own strength, seeking after the fleeting treasures of this world. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have placed our trust in money and possessions rather than depending on You, the true source of all we need.
Lord, just as the people of Egypt cried out in their moment of desperation, we call upon You now. We ask for bread, not of mere physical sustenance but for the Bread of Life—Jesus Christ, Your Son. May we find our fulfillment in Him, for He declared, "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst" (John 6:35). In a world that continuously seeks to fill its emptiness with gold and silver, help us to recognize that only through You do we find true satisfaction and contentment.
Holy Spirit, intercede for us in our times of need. Grant us the wisdom to acknowledge our necessities and the courage to approach You with our requests. Teach us, O Lord, to lean on Your understanding and to trust in Your plans for us, even when the way seems unclear. We ask that You would provide for our families, our communities, and our nations. Help those who are suffering from economic hardship to find solace and restoration in You.
We pray for those who are in positions of influence, that like Joseph, they might govern with righteousness and compassion. Guide our leaders to make decisions that prioritize the wellbeing of the people over material gain. May they act as stewards of what You have entrusted to them so that provisions may flow to those in need. Let their hearts be moved by Your love and mercy as they address the issues of poverty, hunger, and inequality.
As we deepen our relationship with You, we pray for increased faith during trials and tribulations. May we remember Your promise to provide for our needs according to Your riches in glory, through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). When we face times of lack, may we not despair but instead fall back into Your loving arms, knowing that You will sustain us.
Lord, teach us to share the blessings we receive. Just as Joseph graciously provided for the Egyptians, let us be instruments of Your love and generosity. Help us to open our hands to those who are hurting, giving food, comfort, and hope to all who come to us, knowing that we are merely conduits of Your abundant grace.
In closing this prayer, we declare our dependence on You, O Lord. Like the Egyptians, we come before You with our petitions for bread, both for ourselves and for those around us. May we always remember that You are our sustainer, our provider, and our everlasting source of life. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
