A Prayer of Mourning and Awakening
"¶ And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes." - Genesis 37:29

Heavenly Father,
We come to You today with hearts that are heavy and minds that are troubled, seeking comfort and understanding in our sorrow. In Genesis 37:29, it is recorded, "And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes." This moment of despair reflects the agony of loss and the profound realization that we often come face to face with the unexpected and the unfathomable.
Lord, as we reflect on the despair that filled Reuben’s heart when he discovered that Joseph was no longer in that pit, we cannot help but understand the depth of grief he felt. In our lives, we too have pits—pits of disappointment, pits of betrayal, pits that signify our loss and mourning. We come before You, acknowledging that at times, we find ourselves in these very moments, yearning for clarity and purpose amidst our pain.
Father, we lift up all those who, like Reuben, have experienced a loss—whether it be through death, separation, or betrayal. We ask that You wrap them in Your tender embrace, reminding them that they are not alone in their sorrow. As Reuben rent his clothes in grief, let us also lay bare our struggles and our anger before You. Help us to express our emotions authentically and to do so in a way that leads us to healing and reconciliation. Teach us to be honest about our losses, yet allow them to open our hearts to Your divine presence.
O Lord, in the face of despair, we often forget that You are the God who sees the unseen. Joseph’s absence in the pit was also the beginning of a greater story only You could see. Remind us that sometimes our path may lead us through valleys of shadows, but You are ever-present. Your plans are higher than our plans, and Your thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). Help us to trust in Your promises and keep our faith alive even when we cannot trace Your hand.
Help us to understand that like Reuben, our reactions to loss can sometimes be impulsive or ill-informed. Grant us wisdom in our responses to painful situations, teaching us to turn to You first, rather than acting out of anger or despair. In our searching, let us find solace in Psalm 34:18, which reassures us that "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
Heavenly Father, we pray for restoration and healing in our lives. When we feel that we have ventured too far into the pits of despair, remind us that You are the God who restores and redeems. Like You rescued Joseph and positioned him for greatness beyond his suffering, so too do we trust You to work all things together for good (Romans 8:28). Instill in us the strength to hope in the face of hopelessness, and to believe that from our deepest trials can arise a testimony of Your glory and grace.
Finally, Lord, we pray for reconciled relationships, just as You brought Joseph and his brothers back together. Help us to seek forgiveness and healing with those who have wronged or hurt us, as well as to extend grace to those we feel resentment towards. May the story of Joseph remind us that family and forgiveness can find their way back to hope, just like Reuben finding that pit empty led to an unfolding of God's perfect plan.
Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayer. May we apply these lessons of loss, hope, and restoration in our lives, so that we might glorify You in our healing journey. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
