A Prayer for Discernment in Choices: Reflecting on Genesis 13:10
"And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar." - Genesis 13:10

Heavenly Father,
In this sacred moment, I bow my heart and mind before Thee, acknowledging Thy greatness, Thy wisdom, and Thy unending love that covers the earth like the waters cover the sea. I come to You today, inspired by the powerful imagery of Genesis 13:10, where it is written: 'And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.'
Lord, I reflect on the choice that Lot faced in that moment. He lifted his eyes to the land spread before him, rich and abundant, likened unto the lush paradise of Eden. How often do we find ourselves at a crossroads, where the choices before us seem filled with promise and potential? Grant me, O Lord, the wisdom to see beyond surface allure. Help me to recognize that what appears enticing may not always align with Your divine plan.
As Lot gazed upon the well-watered plains, I recognize that my decisions often mirror his. In a world filled with options and opportunities, it is so easy to chase after that which glimmers brightly in the light of worldly prosperity. Yet, as I reflect on Lot’s choice, I am reminded of the dire consequences that followed the prosperity of Sodom and Gomorrah. While the land was fertile, the morals of the cities were corrupted, leading to their ultimate destruction.
Father, teach me to discern the right paths. Allow me to lift my eyes upon my own circumstances and choices, seeing with clarity and insight. When I am drawn to the plain of Jordan, where everything seems favorable, let me not forget to seek Thy counsel first. I ask You to illuminate my heart with the wisdom of Proverbs 3:5-6, 'Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.'
Lord, sometimes I fear making the wrong choice. I worry that I might end up in a place that leads me away from You, much like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah led Lot and his family away from true righteousness. I pray for Your guidance to avoid paths that lead to destruction, even when they appear enticing. Deliver me from the snares of temptation, and help me to trust in the ways of righteousness that may not always be filled with immediate gratification but lead to everlasting joy.
O God, instead of focusing on the allure of greener pastures that appear well-watered on the surface, help me to cultivate a heart that finds its joy in Your presence. I wish to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth my fruit in due season as spoken in Psalm 1. Let my roots go deep in Your Word and love, so I can withstand the storms that life may bring forth against me.
As I pray today, I ask that You bless those around me with the same discernment and wisdom in their own lives. In a world that constantly pulls us in different directions, let us strive to be united in purpose, anchored in faith, and guided by Thy Holy Spirit.
Thank You, dear Father, for hearing my prayer. I place my trust in You, knowing that You see the hearts of men, and You lead us to paths of life and peace. As I move forward, may I ever be mindful to seek Your will above my own, choosing that which aligns with Your truth and glorifies Your name.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
