A Prayer for Divine Authority and Guidance
"Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?" - Ezra 5:9

Heavenly Father,
We gather before Your throne today, humbled and in awe of Your magnificent power and sovereignty. We come to You as Your children, seeking wisdom and understanding as we reflect upon the words of Ezra 5:9, where the elders were questioned about their authority to build the house and to restore the walls. We recognize that not all endeavors receive the stamp of legitimacy and support that come from You, the ultimate source of authority and guidance.
Most Gracious Lord, as we consider the question posed to the elders—"Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?"—we find ourselves contemplating the foundations upon which we stand. We ponder, who indeed commands us in our own lives? Who directs our paths? In a world full of chaos and uncertainty, it is easy to lose sight of the purposes for which we have been created. We implore You, O God, to help us discern Your voice amid the noise of our world. May we always seek Your counsel first when we are tasked to build—whether it be in our homes, our communities, or in our hearts.
We pray, Lord, that just as the elders had the boldness to step forward in faith despite questioning, we too may be emboldened to take the steps You command us to take. Equip us with the courage, strength, and unwavering faith to pursue Your call upon our lives. Help us to recognize that it is not merely our own will that guides us, but rather the mighty command of Your Spirit that empowers us to do the work You assign.
O Lord, give us clarity of purpose as we endeavor to build not only physical structures but also spiritual ones. Building faith in our families, nurturing relationships, and strengthening our bonds with one another are all sacred tasks that require Your divine command. Help us to lay each brick carefully, ensuring that our actions are rooted in love, compassion, and dedication to Your will.
As we move forward in these tasks, grant us the wisdom to engage not just in activities, but in the heartfelt intentions that ignite our spirits. Teach us to ask ourselves honestly, "Who commanded us to build?" and lead us to seek Your voice in every aspect of our lives. May our actions reflect a humble submission to Your guidance, a fervent desire to bring glory to Your name.
Lord, we also lift up those around us who are questioning their call or feeling uncertain about the work they are meant to do. Comfort and encourage them, O God, and remind them that they are not alone in their journey. May they feel the embrace of Your presence, showing them that they are indeed commissioned by You in their labor of love. Let them know that every act of kindness, every effort to restore, and every moment of faithfulness matters in Your Kingdom.
Father, we acknowledge that building can be met with opposition, just as the elders faced hurdles when they began constructing the temple and walls. Therefore, we pray for perseverance and strength to withstand any doubts or challenges that may arise along the way. May we rise to these challenges with faith as our foundation, believing that it is You who helps us to build, to restore, and to fortify our lives against adversities.
Finally, we thank You, Lord, for the promise that when we seek You and Your kingdom first, all these things shall be added unto us. We trust in Your provision, Your guidance, and Your authority over all we undertake. As we embark on new projects and continue in old works, may we continually ask, "Who commanded us to build this house?" reminding ourselves of the wisdom and power that come from You alone.
We offer this prayer in the beautiful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who guides us in truth and light.
Amen.
