A Prayer of Understanding and Growth

"The Word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel; And say, Thus saith the Lord God; A great eagle with great wings, long-winged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar: He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants. He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree. And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs. There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation. It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine. Say thou, Thus saith the Lord God; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof. Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew." - Ezekiel 17:1-10

O Lord God of Hosts, in humble adoration, I bow before You, recognizing the power of Your Word as revealed through the prophet Ezekiel. You are the Almighty, the Creator who spoke the universe into existence, and I come before You with a heart eager to understand the deeper truths woven within this riddle and parable You have given to the house of Israel.

As I reflect upon Ezekiel 17:1-10, I ponder the imagery of the great eagle with mighty wings, long and full of feathers, who comes to Lebanon to take the highest branch of the cedar tree. Lord, help me to grasp the significance of this eagle, for he symbolizes strength, power, and swiftness. I see how he carefully selects the young twigs of the cedar, and I am reminded of how You, too, choose those whom You desire to raise up.

Lord, I pray that You would open my eyes and heart to recognize that You are always at work, even when I cannot see it. Just as the eagle conveyed the branch to a land of commerce and prosperity, I believe, O God, that You have purposes for my life and the lives of those around me, to bring us into fruitful places where we can thrive. Yet, in the midst of this, I want to lay down my own ambitions and be aligned with Your divine will.

As I contemplate the seed of the land that was planted in a fruitful field — a place beside great waters — I am reminded that You are the Source of all nourishment. Teach me, Lord, to seek my sustenance in You. May my roots extend deeply into the rich soil of Your Word, and may I draw from the Living Water that springs forth eternally. You have set me where I can flourish, yet I confess that sometimes I bend towards false sources, thirsty for approval and success from ungodly influences.

O Father, may I resemble that vine which once had the promise of abundant fruit, yet realized her branches reaching toward another great eagle, seeking help and support from that which cannot satisfy my soul. Forgive me for the times I have turned to the world, O God. Help me to keep my gaze fixed on You alone. Show me how to nurture my relationship with You, understanding that true growth comes from reliance upon You as my Keeper.

As You ask, Lord, shall this vine prosper, which has turned its roots away from the true Keeper? How often I have thought my strength and ambition could yield a fruitful life apart from You. Remind me, O Lord, that without Your power, all efforts are in vain. Let not the east wind of trials and tribulations cause me to wither, but instead let them draw me closer to You, to solidify my trust in Your unfailing plan.

Help me remember that all that You have planted within me will need to endure tests of endurance, and may I emerge from those trials even more firmly rooted in Your love and grace. For Your word says, "being planted, shall it prosper?" and the answer is clear: Without You, I can do nothing. Strengthen me, Father, for the journey ahead. May I be fertile ground for all that You want to do in my life, bearing fruit that glorifies Your name.

Lord, I commit myself afresh to You. Like branches that turn towards the sun, let my heart turn towards You, my true source of life, joy, and purpose. Teach me to cultivate a heart of gratitude and trust, as I await the seasons of growth You have ordained. May I always remember that there is no other vine, no other source, that can compare to the nourishment found in You alone.

Thank You, Lord, for Your insightful Word. May it guide my steps, strengthen my roots, and shape my future to reflect Your glory. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Ezekiel 17:1-10 - "The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set forth an allegory and tell it to the Israelites as a parable. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: A great eagle with powerful wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colors came to Lebanon. Taking hold of the top of a cedar, he broke off its topmost shoot and carried it away to a land of merchants, where he planted it in a city of traders.

He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil. He planted it like a willow by abundant water, and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. Its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs.

But there was another great eagle with powerful wings and full plumage. The vine now sent out its roots toward him from the plot where it was planted and stretched out its branches to him for water. It had been planted in good soil by abundant water so that it would produce branches, bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’

Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Will it thrive? Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it withers? All its new growth will wither. It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by the roots. Even if it is transplanted, will it thrive? Will it not wither completely when the east wind strikes it—wither away in the plot where it grew?’”"
