When the Mountain Quakes: A Prayer Before the Holy Fire of God

"And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly." - Exodus 19:18

"And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly." - Exodus 19:{verse.verse_number}

O LORD God Almighty, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, I come before Thee with reverence and trembling, mindful of Thy holiness and Thy power. Thou art not like man that Thou shouldest be careless or common; Thou art high and lifted up, righteous in all Thy ways, pure in all Thy judgments, faithful in all Thy promises. And as I draw near to Thee in prayer, I remember Thy mighty revelation, when Thy presence was made known in awe and terror and glory. For it is written in the Holy Scriptures, in the King James Version: “And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.”

Lord, I confess that my heart often forgets how weighty and wonderful Thy presence truly is. I can become distracted, hurried, and shallow in spirit, as though the Holy One of Israel were a small thing. Forgive me, O God, for the ways I have treated sacred things lightly—when my worship has been routine, when my repentance has been delayed, when my obedience has been partial. Put within me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me, that I may not approach Thee with empty words, but with sincere faith and humble submission.

Teach me, O LORD, the fear of the LORD that is clean, enduring for ever. Let the image of Sinai instruct my soul: the mountain wrapped in smoke, the fire of Thy descent, the trembling of the ground beneath. If the inanimate mountain quaked at Thy coming, how much more should my soul be moved to bow before Thee? Let my pride quake, let my self-will shake, let my stubbornness crumble. Burn away whatever is unholy within me. As Thou didst descend upon the mountain in fire, descend upon my life by Thy Spirit, and kindle in me a holy flame—pure devotion, steadfast love, and willing obedience.

O LORD, I ask Thee to sanctify my thoughts and desires. Where there is sin hidden in corners of my heart, bring it into Thy light. Where there is bitterness, replace it with forgiveness. Where there is fear of man, replace it with fear of God. Where there is compromise, establish conviction. Where there is spiritual sleepiness, awaken me with the certainty that Thou art present, that Thou art near, and that Thou art worthy to be honored above all.

Let Thy Word be to me as thunder and as bread: strong enough to shake me, and sweet enough to sustain me. Write Thy commandments upon my heart, not merely upon my lips. Give me grace to obey Thee when obedience is costly, when it is inconvenient, when it is misunderstood. Make me faithful in secret, faithful in speech, faithful in conduct, faithful in my responsibilities. Set a watch over my mouth, and guide my steps, that I may walk in a way that pleases Thee.

And Lord, when I feel small and overwhelmed by my weakness, remind me that Thy fire is not only a fire of judgment, but a fire that purifies. Thou art able to refine, to cleanse, and to strengthen. Thou art able to take what is broken and make it whole, to take what is cold and make it warm with holy love. Draw me close, but keep me humble; comfort me, but keep me vigilant; bless me, but keep me obedient. Let me not seek Thy gifts more than Thy presence.

I pray for my household and for all whom I love: let Thy holiness dwell among us. Let our home be a place where Thy Name is honored, where prayer is welcome, where truth is spoken, where mercy is practiced, and where peace rests upon our hearts. And I pray for Thy church: awaken us from complacency. Let us not play with sacred things. Let us behold Thee anew, as at Sinai—glorious, mighty, and holy—so that our worship would be reverent, our repentance sincere, our love fervent, and our witness bold.

O LORD, be exalted in my life. If the whole mount quaked greatly at Thy presence, let my soul likewise respond—trembling at sin, trembling at Thy Word, and trembling with joy that the living God draws near. Prepare me to meet Thee daily, not as a stranger, but as my God and my King. And let my life be an altar where the fire of devotion does not die out, but burns steadily to Thy glory.

I ask these things with humility and faith, trusting not in my righteousness, but in Thy mercy. Let the smoke of my prayers rise before Thee, and let my heart be made ready for Thy presence. In Thy holy Name I pray, Amen.
