A Prayer for Wisdom and Balance in Righteousness

"Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?" - Ecclesiastes 7:16

"Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?" - Ecclesiastes 7:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

We gather before You today with hearts full of reverence and humility, recognizing that You are the ultimate source of wisdom and understanding. Your Word reminds us in Ecclesiastes 7:16, "Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?" We come to You seeking clarity and guidance as we contemplate the depth of this verse.

Lord, we acknowledge Your infinite wisdom. Sometimes, in our desire to please You and live righteously, we may lose sight of the balance that You desire for our lives. We confess that there are moments when we strive to appear righteous, when we may even become self-righteous. We ask for Your forgiveness for any times we have looked down upon others in our pursuit of righteousness, forgetting that we are all flawed and in need of Your grace.

Grant us the ability to discern what it truly means to live a righteous life. Help us to understand that righteousness is not just about following rules but about embodying Your love and compassion. Teach us to cultivate a heart that seeks justice, mercy, and humility, reflecting Your character in all aspects of our lives. May righteousness flow from our hearts, not from a place of pride or the desire to appear wise before others, but from an authentic relationship with You.

As we meditate on the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, give us insight into the dangers of excess, whether it be in our righteousness or our pursuit of wisdom. Help us to remain grounded and recognize our limitations. Sometimes, in our quest for understanding, we may overanalyze, complicate life, or set unrealistic expectations for ourselves and others. Please remind us that true wisdom is not always found in human knowledge but is rooted in reverence for You.

Father, help us to embrace simplicity and the beauty of life, rather than becoming entangled in the complexities of our thoughts. Encourage us to rest in the assurance of Your plans and purposes. Keep us from the tendency to be overly critical, of both ourselves and others, particularly when we think we have attained a higher moral ground.

Lord, instill in us the understanding that humility is a crucial part of wisdom. When we are humble, we acknowledge our need for You, and we open ourselves to learning from those around us. Correct us gently when we are in danger of becoming 'over wise' in our own eyes, and Lead us always back to the foundation of true wisdom, which is the fear of the Lord. Let us remember that wisdom is not only about knowledge but also about knowing how to live wisely in accordance with Your will.

We seek a balanced approach to our faith, God—a faith that enables us to engage with the complexities of life without succumbing to despair or discouragement. Help us to be filled with joy, to celebrate the goodness of life, and to extend grace to others as we walk the path You have laid for us. Allow us to carry Your light into our interactions, embodying grace and understanding rather than judgment and condemnation.

Today, we surrender our need to control or predict life outcomes. We release the pressure we sometimes place upon ourselves to be perfect or to know everything. In doing so, may we experience a deeper sense of freedom and peace anchored in Your everlasting love.

Thank You, Lord, for Your patience with us as we grow in our understanding of what it means to live righteously and wisely. We trust that with Your guidance, we will walk in harmony with Your will, embracing the beauty of balance in our lives.

In Jesus’ name, we pray this and believe, Amen.
