A Prayer of Reflection on Ecclesiastes 6:7

"All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled." - Ecclesiastes 6:7

"All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled." - Ecclesiastes 6:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As I come before You today, I take a moment to pause and contemplate the words of the wise man in Ecclesiastes 6:7: "All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled." Lord, I am thankful for the truths found in Your Word that help us navigate this life filled with toil and striving. I recognize how easy it is to become consumed by the endless pursuit of satisfaction, working tirelessly for fleeting rewards that often leave me yearning for more. Today, as I reflect on this verse, I seek Your wisdom and guidance to understand the deeper meaning behind it.

O Lord, I acknowledge that my labor can often feel burdensome, and I can become so consumed by my tasks and responsibilities that I lose sight of what truly fulfills me. Help me to remember that while I need sustenance for my body, it is ultimately You who satisfies my soul. Teach me to seek not just material comfort, but the profound joy that comes from a relationship with You. Open my eyes, Lord, so that I may see the blessings that surround me, the love of family and friends, and the quiet moments of beauty in my life. I ask that You help me cultivate an appetite for spiritual nourishment, drawing me closer to Your heart.

Father, I confess that there have been times when I have overly relied on my own strength to achieve goals that are ultimately not fulfilling. I have chased after temporary pleasures and achievements, thinking that they will bring lasting satisfaction. Yet, I have found myself still hungry, still striving, still longing for more. In those moments, I have missed the opportunities to embrace the gifts of contentment and peace that You offer. Forgive me for my misguided pursuits and grant me discernment in understanding what truly brings fulfillment in this life.

Lord, I also think of those around me—friends, family, co-workers—who may be working diligently yet feel an emptiness in their lives. I pray for them, Father, that You would intervene in their hearts and draw them unto Yourself. May they discover that their true appetite finds its fulfillment not in the labor of their hands, but in the grace and mercy that flows from You. May they come to know the joy that can only be found in serving You and seeking Your Kingdom first, as outlined in Matthew 6:33.

Help me, dear God, to approach my labor with a spirit of gratitude. May I work wholeheartedly, understanding that every task is a chance to glorify You. Let my work not be solely for sustenance, but as an offering unto You—a reflection of my love and commitment to the life You have gifted me. May I serve others through my labor and seek to fulfill their needs as well as my own.

I ask for the humility to recognize the limits of my desires. Teach me, Lord, how to be still in Your presence and to find quietness amidst the chaos of ambition and activity. Remind me of Philippians 4:19, that You shall supply all my needs according to Your riches in glory. I embrace the truth that You are my Shepherd, and I shall not want. May I continually seek to fill my life with Your love and the fruit of the Holy Spirit, which are the true sources of satisfaction and fulfillment.

In closing, I thank You, Father, for the reminder that our attempts to fill our appetites apart from You will lead to emptiness. Let me find joy in laboring for You and intentionally seeking the things that truly matter. I commit this prayer into Your hands, trusting in Your perfect wisdom, in Jesus' precious name. Amen.
