A Prayer for the Refugee and the Oppressed

"You shall not give up to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you. He shall dwell with you, in your midst, in the place which he shall choose within one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him." - Deuteronomy 23:15-16

"You shall not give up to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you. He shall dwell with you, in your midst, in the place which he shall choose within one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him." - Deuteronomy 23:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with hearts that are heavy for those who seek refuge and relief from oppression. In the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 23, verses 15 and 16, Your Word reminds us, "Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee: He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose within one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him."

Lord, we lift up to You all those who have escaped from the chains of bondage, those who have fled from the harsh realities of servitude and oppression in search of freedom. We thank You for the provisions You have set forth in Your Word, guiding us on how to treat our fellow human beings, especially those who are vulnerable and in need. May we be known as a people who welcome the stranger, just as You have commanded.

Father, help us to understand that each person who seeks refuge has a story, a pain, and a journey that led them to this moment. Let us not turn a blind eye to their suffering, but instead open our hearts and homes to receive them with compassion and love. Teach us to see them as our neighbors, deserving of dignity and respect. May we create safe spaces where they can dwell, where they can feel welcomed and accepted.

We pray for those who are in positions of power, that they would be called to uphold justice and righteousness. May the leaders of our nations recognize the plight of the oppressed and the importance of Your command to not return them to their former masters. We ask for wisdom and discernment in the laws and policies that will govern how we treat individuals who come to us seeking safety and sanctuary.

Lord, bring about a spirit of empathy within our communities. Help us to not only hear the cries of the oppressed but to act on their behalf. May we embody the love that Christ exemplified, seeking justice for the marginalized. As You have taught us through Your Word, we pray that we would not oppress those who are vulnerable but instead support and empower them to rebuild their lives.

We think of those who are currently suffering under oppressive regimes, those who are enslaved or trapped in cycles of poverty and violence. We cry out on their behalf, asking You to intervene in their situations. Raise up advocates and voices for the voiceless, and inspire us to join in the fight for freedom and restoration. Give us the courage to speak out against injustice and to stand in solidarity with the oppressed.

As we reflect on the fact that You desire for every person to have a place of refuge, we ask that You provide for those who are fleeing danger. Whether it be through our hands or the hands of others, may they find the assistance they need. Help us to be generous, not only with our resources but with our hearts, making space for the needs of others—reflecting Your love and kindness.

We pray for healing for all who have been harmed by oppression. Touch their hearts with Your comfort and give them strength to begin anew. Help them to find hope in the midst of despair and light in their darkest moments.

Finally, Lord, may we continually look to You for guidance in how to treat our neighbors. Build within us a community that echoes Your heart—a community that honors freedom, protects the displaced, and advocates for justice. Let our lives bear witness to Your grace, as we obey Your Word and live it out in deed.

We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus, our Savior and Advocate.

Amen.
