A Prayer for Justice and Righteousness in Our Society
"¶ Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;" - Amos 2:6

O Divine Creator, our eternal God who dwells in the heavens above and watches over all the earth, we approach Your throne of grace with humility and reverence in our hearts. We acknowledge Your infinite wisdom, and we come as a congregation of believers, reflecting on Your words spoken through the prophet Amos. In Amos 2:6, You declare, “Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes.”
Lord, we stand before You, recognizing that these words echo in our present reality. As we consider the injustices that permeate our societies today, we feel a profound sense of sorrow. Forgive us, O Lord, as we reflect on the times we have turned a blind eye to injustice, or even worse, contributed to the plight of the vulnerable among us. You have called us, O God, to be instruments of Your peace and advocates for those who cannot speak for themselves. Yet too often, we have been silent.
We lament the ways in which the righteous are sold for silver in our own cities—where bribes and corruption undermine integrity, where the innocent are penalized, and the guilty roam free due to the favor of the wealthy. Our hearts break for the poor, Lord, who are traded for a mere pair of shoes—those symbols of comfort and security that should never be withheld from those in need but are instead used as a currency of exploitation.
Help us, almighty God, to confront these injustices in our communities. Fuel our hearts with courage to stand against corruption and inequity. Give us the strength to rise, to advocate for those who are marginalized, and to ensure that justice flows like a river in our midst. Let us be quick to respond when we see those around us being wronged, standing up for the rights of the oppressed, and lifting up the downtrodden. May we not only be hearers of Your Word but doers as well, reflecting Your compassion in practical ways.
We ask for Your mercy, Lord, as we intercede for our nation and the world. Grant our leaders the wisdom they need to enact fair laws and protections for all citizens, particularly the vulnerable and defenseless. Stir within their hearts a heart of compassion, reminding them of their responsibility bestowed by You to lead with equity and justice. May they be moved not by greed or ambition, but by a deep sense of duty to do what is right and just in Your eyes.
As we meditate on Your words, Lord, let them challenge us to be an active presence of love in a world that seems to have forgotten the value of righteousness. Keep us ever mindful of the plight of the poor and helpless. Inspire organizations and social movements that seek justice; bless their efforts, and let their voices be amplified in times of need.
In the spirit of repentance, we pray that our hearts align with Yours, that we may be broken for the things that break Your heart. Teach us to be advocates of love, stewards of justice, and representatives of Your heavenly kingdom on earth. Remind us that when we serve the least of these, we serve You.
As we conclude this prayer, may we commit ourselves to the work of justice. Let the lessons of Amos resonate deeply within our spirits, leading us to act in ways that reflect Your goodness and mercy. And may we never forget that we are called to be a beacon of hope in the darkness, standing firm in faith, proclaiming Your truth with love and compassion.
In the precious name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
