A Prayer for Boldness in the Face of Persecution
"¶ Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only." - Acts 11:19

Heavenly Father,
As we gather in Your presence today, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude and reverence for Your Word, especially the powerful message contained in Acts 11:19: "Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only."
Lord, this verse illuminates a chapter in the early Church's history, one that was marked by fidelity, resilience, and steadfast faith in the face of great adversity. We recognize that the scattering of these believers was a direct consequence of persecution, a time of suffering that arose from their unwavering devotion to You and the Gospel of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank You for their example, for their willingness to stand firm even when faced with threats against their lives, and for their relentless passion to spread Your Word.
As we reflect on this Scripture, we ask for Your strength in our hearts to face our own challenges, temptations, and trials. We live in a world where we, too, can encounter persecution for our beliefs. Help us to remain courageous in our faith, just as these early Christians did, as they travelled far and wide to preach the Good News. Kindle in us a fervor to share Your truth with those around us, regardless of the circumstances we might face.
Lord, we plead for the boldness that characterized those who spread Your Word in dark times. Fill us with the Holy Spirit, that we may be emboldened to proclaim Your Gospel without fear and to lead others to the hope that comes in knowing You. Let Your words be our words, as we communicate Your love and salvation to those who need to hear it most, even if it means stepping outside our comfort zones.
We recognize the hardship that comes with being scattered. Just as those who fled persecution faced uncertainty, we often encounter situations that make us feel anxious or lost. We pray for Your guidance through these difficult moments. Lord, bless us with peace in our hearts, reminding us that You are always with us, that no matter how far we feel from home or how uncertain the path appears, You guide our steps.
Help us to remember that our mission is not limited to those who are like us or to those who know You already. Teach us to reach out beyond our circles, just as the early Christians began to share the Gospel with more than just the Jews. Enlarge our hearts and open our eyes to the needs of all people, understanding that Your love transcends racial, cultural, and boundary lines.
We also pray for those who are currently undergoing persecution. Strengthen our brothers and sisters in Christ who face trials for their faith. Let them feel Your presence with them, providing them comfort and courage as they continue to share Your love in hostile environments.
May we be driven by compassion to support them through our prayers, actions, and resources. Stir us to mission; let our lives be a testimony to others that even in the toughest of times, Your love prevails, that the Gospel is worth the sacrifice.
Finally, Lord, we ask that You stir in each of us a deeper commitment to Your Word. May our hearts be like fertile ground ready to produce a bountiful harvest of faith. Help us to nourish our understanding through prayer, study, and the fellowship of believers, so we can better equip ourselves to preach Your Word effectively.
Thank You, Lord, for the forebears of our faith, for the legacy of resilience and commitment they left us. May we be inspired and emboldened to live out our faith with as much passion and dedication as those who came before us, whether in times of peace or persecution.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
