A Prayer for Growth in Faith
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;" - 2 Peter 1:5-6

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am filled with gratitude for the gift of faith that You have bestowed upon me. The profound truth of Your Word resonates deeply in my heart, particularly the exhortation found in 2 Peter 1:5-6: "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness." Lord, I acknowledge that my journey in faith is not merely a passive acceptance of Your grace, but a call to active engagement and growth in Christlikeness. I seek Your guidance as I strive to embody these virtues in my daily life.
First, I pray for goodness, Lord. Help me to pursue purity of heart and intentions. May my words and actions reflect Your love and compassion. Grant me the wisdom to define goodness not by worldly standards but by the light of Your truth. Let my endeavors be characterized by kindness and integrity, illustrating to those around me the beauty of living in accordance with Your will.
Next, I ask for an abundance of knowledge. Your Word declares in Proverbs 1:7 that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge." I desire to know You more deeply and to grow in understanding of Your character and ways. Unveil the mysteries of Your Scriptures to me, and enable me to apply this knowledge in practical ways that enrich my life and the lives of those I encounter. Help me to cultivate a hunger for truth, always seeking wisdom through prayer and reflection.
Lord, as I deepen my faith, I recognize the need for self-control. Strengthen my willpower to resist temptations that lead me away from Your path. In moments of trial, remind me of the power of the Holy Spirit within me; let me exercise discipline over my thoughts, words, and actions. May I learn to master my impulses and instead choose reflection and godly responses. Help me to embrace moments of struggle as opportunities to practice restraint and reliance on Your strength.
I humbly seek perseverance. Father, in the face of adversity and challenges, grant me the courage to stand firm in my faith. Remind me that trials are not in vain but serve to refine my character and build my testimony. Help me to remain steadfast, drawing upon Your promises and the examples set forth by the saints who have gone before me. May I never waver in my commitment to You, even during the darkest valleys of my journey.
As I develop perseverance, guide me further into godliness. I yearn for my life to mirror the qualities of Christ – His humility, compassion, and righteousness. May my actions produce fruits of the Spirit, glorifying Your name in all things. Teach me to love without condition, to serve without hesitation, and to give without expecting anything in return.
Lord, I recognize that this path of growth requires an intentional effort – a conscious decision to pursue these virtues with diligence and passion. I ask humbly for Your assistance in this endeavor. Keep my heart aligned with Your purposes, my mind focused on Your truth, and my spirit ready to respond to Your calling.
As I strive to add to my faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, and godliness, let each attribute build upon the last. Help me to understand that this journey is lifelong, a continuous process of becoming more like Jesus. May my life become a testament of faith in action, inspiring others to seek You and find strength in their own walks with Christ.
I pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
