The Watchman’s Prayer: Seeking Discernment in Times of Change
"And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel, and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?" - 2 Kings 9:17

Heavenly Father,
In the stillness of this moment, I approach Your throne with reverence and a heart yearning for Your wisdom. I reflect on the words written in 2 Kings 9:17, where it is said, "And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel, and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?" Lord, as I meditate on this Scripture, I recognize the profound truth contained within it – the importance of watchfulness and discernment during times of transition.
Father, I thank You for being our eternal Watchman, ever alert and aware of the circumstances of our lives. Just as the watchman stood faithfully on the tower, observing the approaching company with anticipation and caution, help us to embody this spirit of vigilance in our own lives. May we become watchmen and watchwomen, keenly attuned to the signs of the times, alert to the movements in the spiritual realms and the physical world around us.
As we face uncertainties, may we be like the watchman in Jezreel — poised and prepared, readily recognizing the shifts in our lives and the advancements of Your plans. Teach us, O God, to discern the company that approaches us, to distinguish between those who bring peace and those who come with strife or deception. Remind us that not all who come toward us do so with good intentions, and grant us the wisdom to respond wisely to each situation that comes before us.
Lord, I pray for the spirit of discernment to infuse our spirits. Help us see the underlying intentions and motivations of those we encounter daily. As Joram ordered that an horseman be sent to inquire about peace, instill in us the courage and the clarity to seek the truth underlying our interactions. Enable us to ask the right questions, not just of others, but also of ourselves. Is it peace? Are our choices leading us closer to Your peace or further away? Are our decisions aligned with Your will?
Grant us patience as we wait for the answers, just as the watchman awaited the report from the couriers sent forth. May we not rush to conclusions but rather stand firm in our trust in You, knowing that You see all and understand all. Teach us to be still, for in our stillness, we can hear Your still small voice amid the noise of the world.
As we seek Your guidance, Father, fortify our hearts with courage. The uncertainties of life can feel overwhelming, and it is easy to sway under the pressure. But remind us that we are fortified by Your presence. When Jehu approached, he heralded a significant change; let us be open to the shifts You bring into our lives, even if they stretch our faith or comfort zones.
Help us to embrace change with grace, understanding that a new season in our lives often brings forth new opportunities to grow closer to You and to manifest Your love to the world. Encourage us to welcome those who come with peace and to know how to respond to conflicts and challenges with a heart rooted in Your truth and love.
Lastly, Lord, as we journey through this life, help us to remain true watchmen for those around us. Let our words and actions reflect Your peace, drawing others closer to You. May we stand vigilant, knowing that the work of Your kingdom often requires discernment and action.
In Jesus’ name, I pray,
Amen.
