A Prayer for Divine Strength in Times of Distress
"And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not." - 2 Chronicles 28:20

O Heavenly Father,
As I come before Thy throne of grace, I am reminded of the trials faced by the king of Judah, Ahaz, during the reign of Tilgath-pilneser, king of Assyria. Your Word in 2 Chronicles 28:20 tells us, "And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not." I cannot fathom the depth of that distress, nor the weight of the burden Ahaz bore. Yet, I recognize that Your purpose in allowing such challenges is not for harm, but for a divine awakening within us.
Lord, life is filled with moments when the enemy seems to surround us, like Tilgath-pilneser, intent on causing distress. In these moments, when the darkness closes in, I pray for the wisdom to seek You above all else. Let my heart not be troubled by the external forces that bring anxiety or fear, but rather turn to You as my Source of strength and comfort.
As I reflect on Ahaz’s struggle, I see how easily one can become overwhelmed by circumstances beyond their control. His reliance on alliances with foreign kings, rather than seeking Your counsel, led to further despair. Teach me, O Lord, to rely solely upon Your strength. Help me to turn to You in my moments of trouble, acknowledging that man’s help can only bring temporary relief, while Your grace is everlasting. You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
In this world filled with tumult, it is so easy to gather false comfort from the things that are fleeting. I pray for clarity to discern between worldly solutions and Your divine support. May I not follow the footsteps of Ahaz, but instead seek Your face and call upon Your name in my time of need. Heal my heart from the distress that life brings, and replace it with Your limitless strength.
Lord Jesus, we know that You faced mockery, betrayal, and finally the grueling agony of the cross, and yet You remained steadfast. You found strength in the relationship you maintained with the Father. Teach me to walk in Your ways and to lean on that very relationship in my times of distress. May I find the refuge and the fortitude that You exemplified, knowing that even when everything seems to fall apart around me, I can find peace in You.
I pray for those who are distressed today. May they turn to You as their source of strength. Help them to see that though the kings of this world do not offer lasting comfort, You are the King who offers everlasting peace. I ask for healing, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually, for those burdened by anxiety and fear.
Let us not forget that You are still in control, even when the circumstances suggest otherwise. Just as Ahaz suffered distress but did not receive strength, let it not be said that I accept despair when I have access to all the strength of heaven.
Lord, may I always remember that though trials come to me, You are the vine and I am the branch. I can do nothing without You (John 15:5). May Your strength be made perfect in my weakness, and may I rejoice in the assurance that when I am weak, then am I strong (2 Corinthians 12:10).
Thank You, Lord, for being my constant source of strength in times of distress. Embolden my spirit, uplift my heart, and fill me with a renewed trust in Your provision. I pray that I may shine Your light in those dark places, encouraging others to turn their eyes towards You, the true source of strength and comfort.
In Your Holy Name, I pray,
Amen.
