A Prayer for Strength in the Face of Adversity
"Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi." - 2 Chronicles 20:2
O Sovereign Lord, our Almighty God, we come before You today with our hearts bowed down and our spirits humbled, recalling the words from Your sacred scripture in 2 Chronicles 20:2, where Your servant Jehoshaphat was informed of a great multitude coming against him. Just as he faced an overwhelming challenge, we too find ourselves surrounded by difficulties that seem insurmountable. Lord, just as Jehoshaphat was told of the vast army approaching from the sea, we hear the voices of our own troubles whispering fears into our ears. But we come to You, trusting in Your power and might to deliver us from our distress.
Holy One, we acknowledge that our strength is but a frail shadow compared to the greatness of Your glory. When Jehoshaphat heard of the multitude, he did not succumb to fear, but rather, he sought You with urgency and fervor. May we likewise seek You earnestly, Lord. Help us to remember that while the storms of life may rage and multitudes may arise against us, we have a refuge in You. We ask that You imbue us with the same spirit of courage and dependence on You that Jehoshaphat displayed.
As our circumstances weigh heavily upon us, we feel the pressures of this life trying to sway our faith. We turn to You now, Lord, guiding us through this turbulent time. Just as the news of war reached Jehoshaphat, we, too, are bombarded with unpleasant tidings, whether in our relationships, our health, or our personal struggles. We plead for Your assurance, O God, that no matter the size of the opposition we face, You are greater still. Help us to recognize that the multitude may be great, but Your promises are greater.
Father God, Your Word reminds us that we must not fear nor be dismayed. Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast and sought Your face, calling the people to turn toward You for help. Inspired by his actions, we commit to seeking You with our whole hearts, surrendering our worries and anxieties into Your capable hands. When we feel overwhelmed by adversity, remind us to fast from fear and feed on faith, enriching our souls with prayers that reflect our trust in You.
As we face our own ‘Hazazon-tamar’ moments—those locations of battle in our lives—let us not lose sight of the victory that lies within our commitment to You. We affirm that we will call upon Your name, lifting our hands, recognizing that our battles are not our own. Teach us to cry out to You, to confess our inadequacies, and to open our hearts for the guidance and wisdom You freely provide.
Lord, prepare our hearts to receive the divine strategy You have for us. Just as You instructed Jehoshaphat not to be afraid, prepare us to listen to Your will. When the multitude comes bearing down, help us to praise You in advance for the victory You will deliver. We want to be obedient to listen, wait, and respond to the truth of Your words. Grant us patience as we wait upon the Lord, knowing that Your timing is always perfect and that liberation shall come from You.
With gratitude, we thank You, for we know that even in our fiercest battles, in the face of chaos, Your peace reigns. Like Jehoshaphat’s declaration, we echo our commitment of reliance on You for strength, guidance, and victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
