A Prayer for Deliverance in Times of Distress
"And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him." - 2 Chronicles 18:31

O gracious and mighty Lord, we come before You today with humble hearts, recognizing our dependence upon Your infinite wisdom and unfailing love. We humbly recall the words of 2 Chronicles 18:31, which tells of a moment of great peril faced by Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. "And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him."
Lord, as we reflect on this scripture, we are reminded of the strength found in calling upon Your name in our times of need. Jehoshaphat, surrounded by his foes, did not despair nor falter under the pressure of impending doom; instead, he lifted his voice in a desperate cry to You. We thank You, Lord, that You listen to the cries of Your people. In moments when we feel encircled by challenges and adversities, may we, like Jehoshaphat, turn our eyes toward You, realizing that You are our ultimate source of help and deliverance.
Father, there are times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, facing situations that seem impossible to navigate. We may be under attack, whether from external circumstances or internal struggles. In these moments, help us to remember the example set by Jehoshaphat. May we have the courage to cry out to You with urgency and sincerity, trusting fully that You will hear us.
We seek Your protection, just as Jehoshaphat did, when he was encompassed about by the captains of the chariots. In the same way, Lord, we ask for Your divine shielding over our lives. Protect us from those who would seek to do us harm, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Surround us with Your angels and keep us safe from all harm. As we encounter struggles that threaten to overwhelm us, may we remember that You are bigger than any challenge that rises up against us.
Lord, we also take to heart the fact that You not only listened to Jehoshaphat's cry, but You intervened. You caused the captains of the chariots to depart from him, offering him a clear path to safety. We prayerfully ask for Your intervention in our lives as well. We plead for Your mighty hand to move in the areas where we feel helpless. Touch the hearts and minds of those around us so that they may see Your will be done in our lives. Help us, O Lord, to walk with confidence, trusting in the promise that when we call upon You, You are there to aid and support us.
Additionally, Lord, we reflect upon the miracle of Your deliverance. Help us to testify courageously about the ways You have helped us in the past. Strengthen our faith as we remember how You have brought us through storms before and how You have consistently provided for our needs. Allow our experiences of Your faithfulness to serve as a beacon of hope for others who are currently being besieged by their own obstacles.
We ask You to give us the grace to see our enemies not merely as obstacles but as opportunities for Your glory to be revealed. Let our responses to adversity echo the faith of Jehoshaphat. Let our cries for help ignite a revival of trust in You, inspiring others to call on Your name, working through our lives to draw them closer to You.
In closing, we thank You for Your unchanging nature, for being our refuge and strength. Let our souls be anchored in Your promises and let our mouths proclaim Your greatness. May we never hesitate to cry out to You, confident that when we do, You will surely come to our aid. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior and stronghold, we pray. Amen.
