A Prayer of Repentance and Deliverance
"Then Samuel said, Assemble all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord. And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. O Sovereign Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth, we come before You with hearts that are contrite and spirits humbled under the weight of our transgressions. In the face of adversity, let us remember the truth of Your word—that You are our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help in trouble.
Just as Samuel offered a sucking lamb as a burnt offering, we recognize the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, our Lamb, who was slain for our sins. In gratitude, we offer ourselves anew to You, Lord. We are reminded that our sacrifice is not of animals, but of our will, our wants, and our lives. And as Samuel cried unto You, Lord, we ask for Your ear to be inclined towards us. As he interceded for the children of Israel and You heard him, may we have the confidence that You hear us today. May we emerge from this time of repentance empowered by Your Spirit, ready to face our giants, knowing we do not stand alone.
