A Prayer for Divine Guidance and Wisdom
"And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day." - 1 Kings 22:5

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of Heaven and Earth, we come before You in humility and reverence, acknowledging Your greatness and majesty. You are the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end; Your wisdom is unsearchable, and Your ways are beyond our understanding. Today, as we reflect upon the words spoken by Jehoshaphat in 1 Kings 22:5, may we be stirred to seek Your guidance in all matters concerning our lives.
"And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD today." Lord, we take a moment to consider the weight of these words. Jehoshaphat, a king known for his desire to do right in Your eyes, recognized the importance of consulting You before taking any action. His heart yearned for Your voice to lead him in difficult times, and we, too, desire to reflect that same yearning for Your counsel.
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge the many decisions we face daily—some trivial and others monumental, all requiring Your divine insight. We confess that too often, we attempt to navigate the complexities of life on our own, relying on our understanding and wisdom. Yet we realize that our understanding is limited, and Your plans for us are perfect. Like Jehoshaphat, we pray that we would make it a priority to seek Your word; may we not be complacent in our approach to the decisions that lie ahead.
As we come before You today, we lay our hearts bare and ask for clarity and direction. In moments of uncertainty, help us to hush the voices of fear and doubt that so easily creep in, and allow us to hear Your still small voice instructing us. Your Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105); may we hold fast to it and let it illuminate the way.
Oh, Lord, we pray for wisdom like that of Jehoshaphat. Instill in us a desire to seek You first, before we leap into action or make big decisions. Teach us to pause, reflect, and consult Your Word diligently, just as he did. May we recognize the importance of surrounding ourselves with godly counsel who will encourage us to do the same. Surround us, dear Lord, with wise friends and advisors who lead us back to Your truth when we stray.
Furthermore, Heavenly Father, help us to cultivate a heart that yearns for fellowship with You. Let our spirits long to steal away in quietness and prayer, searching for Your guidance in the scriptures. Encourage us in our study of the Bible, that we might see the wisdom of Your Word, not merely as words on a page but as living guidance for our day-to-day choices.
We also ask for clarity of heart and mind; remove distractions that might lead us astray from Your perfect plan. Help us to discern Your voice amid the noise of the world, recognizing that You speak in various ways—through nature, through people, through circumstances, and especially through Your Word. As we make our requests known to You, grant us peace that surpasses all understanding, knowing that when we seek You, we align ourselves with Your divine will.
Lord, as Jehoshaphat demonstrated, may we be willing to put aside our agendas and seek Your face with earnestness and sincerity. May our prayers reflect our longing to not just know what You will for us but to desire Your presence in the journey. We submit our plans at Your feet, trusting that Your ultimate purpose will unfold in our lives, bringing glory to Your name.
In this moment of reflection, Lord, teach us how to sit in silence, waiting for Your still, small voice. Help us to recognize and act upon the promptings and revelations You give us through prayer and study. We thank You for the assurance that when we inquire of You, You shall answer. May our hearts be ever willing to listen and obedient to follow.
In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray, Amen.
