A Prayer for Wisdom and Strength in Leadership
"¶ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel." - 1 Kings 12:25

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am moved by the powerful story of Jeroboam, who in 1 Kings 12:25, ‘Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.’ I thank You for Your word, which is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Lord, let us glean wisdom from the actions of past leaders, and may they guide our hearts towards a deeper understanding of Your will in our lives.
Father, You know the heart of every leader. You see the intentions that drive each decision made in positions of power. Jeroboam sought to establish his reign with strength and a foundation in Shechem, a city of great significance to the people of Israel. Lord, as I reflect on those words in the scripture, grant me the wisdom that was sought by leaders of old. Teach me the value of building strong foundations, not only in leadership roles I may hold but also in the daily choices I make.
Oh Lord, just as Jeroboam built Penuel, help me to create spaces of sanctuary, resilience, and strength in the lives of those around me. Help me to foster environments where hope can flourish and where faith in You can be ignited in the hearts of the many. Give me the courage to step out into the unknown, to venture beyond what feels comfortable, much like Jeroboam did when he left Shechem to establish Penuel.
Lord, let Your Holy Spirit flow through me, leading me toward the things that will glorify Your name. May I stand strong and steadfast in my convictions, yet be open to the changes You would have me embrace. Grant me discernment to know when to build and when to withdraw, when to stand firm and when to adapt, adopting a spirit of both strength and humility in my leadership journey.
As I pray for leadership, Lord, I also pray earnestly for unity on every front. Just as Jeroboam ascended the throne amidst division, I see the splintering within our communities today. Help me to sow seeds of peace wherever there is conflict and to bridge gaps that would divide us. Lead us together, hand in hand, to build Shechem and Penuel, places of understanding and cooperation.
Gracious God, I acknowledge that the path of leadership is fraught with challenges. There will be moments when I will feel depleted or misunderstood; however, remind me of the reassurance found in Your presence. Let Your wisdom wash over me as I navigate the complexities of relationships, governance, and civic responsibility in my own life. Help me to imitate the aspects of Jeroboam's story that align with Your will, while being mindful of the missteps that led to division in the kingdom.
I ask for the heart to connect with others, for the insight to lead with compassion, and for the vision to see beyond immediate circumstances. In these moments of uncertainty, help me focus on Your promises, knowing that You are my refuge and strength, my very present help in times of trouble.
Finally, Lord, may every step I take be grounded in prayer and seeking Your will. Let my actions reflect Your love and grace, drawing others closer to Your heart. May I build not only for myself but for generations to come, laying a spiritual legacy that honors Your name.
In trust and faith, I pray these things, knowing that You will guide my every move and fill my heart with courage.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
